NIC coaches to be honored by NJCAA

North Idaho College wrestling coaches Pat Whitcomb and John Owen, as well as men’s basketball coach Rolly Williams are among nearly 200 coaches across 28 sports were nominated by the schools at which they coached.

John Owen 1947-2023: An ultimate coach, but better man

“John made it simple as a coach,” said Whitcomb, who was inducted in the NJCAA Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2014 in Spokane. “You win. Second’s not good enough. Make no doubt about it, you don’t want to be the guy after the guy. But being the guy after John was easy. They just wanted me to keep it going in the right direction.”

The evolution of Tri-State over the years

As the tournament director of the Tri-State wrestling tournament since 1997, Pat Whitcomb has seen the tournament featuring high schools from four states evolve to what it is today.
