Coeur d'Alene School District elementary librarians held their third annual Idaho Battle of the Books district tournament Tuesday evening.

The tournament was hosted by Ramsey Magnet School of Science librarian Marty McCormick. Winton. Sorensen and Atlas elementary schools each sent teams to the tournament. Sorensen's team, The Girls Plus George, took first place. Prizes included the traveling Idaho Battle of the Books trophy and donations from Figpickles Toy Emporium and Mrs. Honeypeeps Sweetshop.

"A big thank you from the librarians to the volunteers who helped make the tournament happen: Devin Sommer, Honeypeeps owner; Crystal Silvers, Ramsey's principal; Jacquie Mercer, third grade teacher at Ramsey; and Dr. Mike Nelson, Coeur d'Alene School District assistant superintendent," Ramsey organizers said in a Wednesday announcement.

Idaho Battle of the Books is an optional statewide reading competition that promotes reading comprehension, cooperative learning and teamwork. Each team of four to five students reads a total of 16 books and "battles" trivia style for comprehension.

Each school will send two teams to the regional tournament April 12, which will be hosted this year by the East Bonner County Public Library in Sandpoint.
