11-year-old makes birthday donation to Post Falls American Legion post

POST FALLS — Instead of gifts for his 11th birthday, Jacob Priddy requested money — not to keep for himself, but for American Legion Post 143.

At his recent birthday party, Jacob set up a donation box asking for $5 from his guests. In total, he raised $130, the entirety of which he recently presented to Commander Jim Culpepper in a box he decorated himself.

“That’s like a million dollars for an 11-year-old,” said Adjutant Tim Shaw.

Though Jacob’s last few birthdays have already been a celebration of family and friends rather than gifts, this was the first year that he chose to raise money to donate locally.

"I wanted to do something that actually was meaningful to me, and it made me feel so good," Jacob said. "It also made me feel good that all of my friends helped by donating to the American Legion."

Military pride runs strong in the Priddy family: Jacob’s dad is a member of Post 143 himself, and his grandfather was the commander of the American Legion post in West Rutland, Vt.

“With our strong military background, the American Legion seemed perfect,” said Jacob’s mom, Sarah Priddy.

Jacob was more than happy with the amount he raised and plans on helping his sister do something similar for her birthday in May.

“This makes us so proud,” Priddy said. “Jacob has a huge heart, and I hope that he is an inspiration and role model to other kiddos.”

Post 143 was not only grateful to receive the donation, but its members were also deeply touched by the gesture.

“There’s enough stories to make us frown,” Shaw said. “This story does the exact opposite of that.”

    Jacob decorated his donation box with the American Flag as well as a fighter plane.
