PREP SOFTBALL: Lake City goes deep to finish sweep of Moscow

MOSCOW — Senior Layla Gugino and freshman Alexandria Routon each homered in the second game as the Lake City Timberwolves outslugged the Moscow Bears 17-8 to complete a sweep of their Inland Empire League doubleheader Thursday at the Moscow School District Community Playfields.  

Lake City won the opener 7-3. 

Gugino, who has signed with Montana, hit a two-run homer in the second inning and a two-run double in the third in the second game for Lake City (6-4-1, 4-1 IEL). 

Routon hit a three-run homer in the second inning, two batters before Gugino’s blast. 

Mariah Thomas and Aaliyah Lopez each had two-run singles for the Timberwolves. 

In the first game, sophomore Tabitha Lopez drove in three runs for Lake City, two on a first-inning double. Thomas added a two-run single in a four-run seventh. 

Madeline Peterson struck out 10 in a complete game for the T-Wolves. 

Moscow is 1-8, 0-4. 

Lake City returns to action April 8 at Sandpoint in an IEL doubleheader.

SANDPOINT — Sophomore Jenna Davenport struck out 11, walked two and allowed three hits for the visiting Vikings in the first game of an IEL sweep of the Bulldogs at War Memorial Field. 

Ellie Henderson had a two-run single in the sixth for Coeur d’Alene (6-0, 4-0 IEL), and Ollie Dudley was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. 

In the second game, Kyndal Bridge went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Molly Nelson was 3 for 5 and drove in one for the Vikings. Henderson was 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs.  

Sandpoint is 1-9, 1-5. 

Coeur d’Alene returns to action April 8 at Lakeland in an IEL doubleheader.

LEWISTON — Keana Peahu-Michael hit an inside-the-park grand slam in the third inning of the second game, and finished with five RBIs as the visiting Trojans earned a split with the Bengals in IEL play at Airport Park. 

Jaya Felix hit a three-run inside-the-park homer in the sixth inning for Post Falls (2-2, 1-1 IEL).  

After Lewiston (4-6, 4-2) forced extra innings with four runs in the bottom of the seventh, Post Falls tallied three in the top of the eighth as Sienna Williams singled in a run, and Lexie McCarroll and Paityn Froman followed with RBI doubles. 

McCarroll finished 4 for 5 with three RBIs, Williams 3 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored, Felix 3 for 4 with three RBIs and four runs. 

“The girls showed tremendous heart and grit today in our second game versus Lewiston,” Post Falls coach Katy Sinn said. “This is probably the most heart I’ve seen from a team in a long time. I’m super proud of the girls for pushing through and continuing to string hits together and be aggressive and aware on the bases.”

Post Falls returns to action April 10 at Coeur d’Alene in an IEL doubleheader.

SPIRIT LAKE — Freshman Shae Jones struck out 11 and walked one in a one-hitter, and the host Tigers (4-1) made three third-inning runs stand up in a nonleague win over the Crimson Hawks (2-4). 

Colville’s lone hit came on a one-out single in the fourth. 

Jesi Kitchin hit an RBI double, and Jones and Emilia Landon followed with run-scoring singles in the third for Timberlake. 

“We played a really great game today,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “We definitely made some mistakes, but I feel like things are really starting to come together for us. My kids are continuing to learn every day, and will only continue to get better. Shae pitched a great game, and as a team, we made some really great contact at the plate.” 

Timberlake returns to action April 8 at Kellogg.

ST. MARIES — Senior Mia Asbury drove in four runs in the opener and senior Averie Baird knocked in five in the nightcap as the Lumberjacks swept the Spartans in Central Idaho League play at City Park. 

Addyson Stewart struck out nine in a one-hitter in the opener for St. Maries (6-2, 4-0 CIL). She walked one, and the lone Priest River hit was a one-out single in the third. 

Asbury, who finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored, hit a three-run triple in the fourth inning.  

Addilyn Turner hit a two-run double and Madison Thomas added a two-run triple in a 13-run third inning. 

In the second game, Turner singled in two runs and Thomas doubled in two more in a 13-run first inning.  

Baird hit a two-run double in the second.  

Lyssa Watkins struck out seven and allowed two hits in five innings. 

Priest River is 0-4-1, 0-4. 

St. Maries returns to action April 8 at home against Potlatch.
