OPINION: Take action

Now is the time for every American who truly cares about our country's future to act. That was the message former Congressional Representatives Larry La Rocco and Richard Stallings brought to Coeur d’Alene this past Sunday. Speaking to a crowd of 400 in Post Falls, the two former Idaho representatives addressed the threats facing democracy today.

Their words echoed Patrick Henry’s historic call to action uttered almost exactly 250 years ago: “This is no time for ceremony. The question before the House is one of awful moment to this country.”

The question before us is one of freedom or autocracy.

Internationally, an inept Secretary of Defense texted war plans in a group chat that included a journalist — in just one example of international diplomacy’s demise. A rogue President, aided by a rogue billionaire, is dismantling government institutions while the Republican caucus stands idly by. Locally, a sheriff suppresses free speech, and a county prosecutor does nothing.

When we reach out to our elected officials, their responses (if given at all) are often dismissive. They seem blind to the threats against our international allies, our Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, public schools, libraries and more.

This is not normal. We are now engaged in a “great and arduous struggle for liberty.”

Although many guests came to our Town Hall with difficult and emotional concerns, the packed auditorium remained peaceful. Hundreds of people were seeking hope, connection, and action. The question came up again and again — what can we do?

The answer is simple: act.

Protest marches have already begun, led by a diverse coalition of people both inside and outside the Democratic party. Though media coverage has been inconsistent, the movement is growing. Idahoans are not cowards; we will continue to march and speak out.

Together, we can peacefully march to save democracy and secure our rights, following the example of Dr. King. The upcoming “Hands Off March” on April 5 is our next opportunity to stand together. People from across America will be marching. In Coeur d’Alene, the peaceful march will happen at U.S. 95 and Appleway from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit www.handsoff2025.com for details.

In this all hands on deck moment, we need everyone. Marching is not the only way to make a difference.

Volunteer with us — there’s a role for you, whether organizing events, helping run social media, strategizing, or fundraising. Your efforts amplify our collective voice and drive change. Fill out the form on our website or social media to get involved.

Second, engage in conversations with your neighbors, even when it’s difficult. One town hall attendee shared the pain of political divisions within families. I think many in that room shared her heartbreak. Change begins with listening and finding common ground. Nobody cares what you know until they know you care. Start with a common set of agreements and go from there.

Third, relentlessly contact your elected representatives. The people elected to serve our nation need to hear our voice — literally. Pick up the phone and make your voice heard. You don’t need a perfectly crafted speech — just a simple, clear message. Try saying, "Hi, my name is (your name), and I am a constituent in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. I oppose (issue). Thank you for your time."

If you have a personal story to share, that’s even better. But remember, done is better than perfect. The sheer volume of calls makes a difference.

Public pressure influences decision-makers more than you might think. When our voices rise together, they listen. How do we know? A representative from Governor Little’s office quietly attended our town hall.

Finally, stay connected. Attend Democratic events, build relationships and engage with your community. Strength lies in numbers, and staying active ensures our movement remains strong.

The American people wanted reform, not the destruction of democracy. Now is the time to get loud, get involved and take action. Together, we can make a difference and work toward a more perfect union.
