PREP SOFTBALL: Nordman's no-no caps Coeur d'Alene sweep in opener

RICHLAND, Wash. — Senior Leah Nordman pitched a four-inning no-hitter with nine strikeouts as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings opened their season with a pair of victories at the Richland mixer at Columbia Playfields. 

Nordman walked just one in Coeur d’Alene’s second game, a 13-0 triumph over Riverside of Chattaroy, Wash. 

In the first game, the Vikings defeated West Valley of Yakima 6-3. 

Nordman pitched three perfect innings, then hit the leadoff batter in the bottom of the fourth, and walked a batter with two out before fanning the final hitter. 

Coeur d’Alene scored nine runs in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run double by Maddy Pratt and a two-run triple by Ollie Dudley. 

Nordman was also 3 for 4 with an RBI. 

Coeur d’Alene trailed West Valley-Yakima 3-0 before scoring once in the fourth and five times in the fifth. Molly Nelson went 3 for 3, including a single in the fifth to score Chloe Burke to break a 3-all tie. Two batters later, Abbey Linder hit a two-run double. 

Jenna Davenport struck out seven for the Vikings.

Coeur d’Alene travels to Moscow on Tuesday for a doubleheader to open Inland Empire League play.

Lake City splits 

at Win The Pitch Classic 

MERIDIAN — Layla Gugino hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the Timberwolves scored nine times in the first two innings and beat Skyview of Nampa 13-7 in their second game Saturday at Owyhee High at the Win The Pitch Classic. 

Lake City fell to Pocatello 7-5 in the first game of the day. 

Madeline Peterson went 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Timberwolves. Brooklyn Caan hit a two-run double in the first and finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. 

In the first game, Layla Gugino hit a solo homer in the third inning and finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs.  

Azlinn Bullock hit a three-run homer for Pocatello in the bottom of the third. The Thunder scored twice on an error in the sixth to win it.  

"Overall it was a great weekend," Lake City coach Jordyn Hensley said. "We played four good, competitive teams and battled well. It was a great weekend to build on and I am excited to see what this team is going to grow into this season."

Lake City (3-3-1) travels to Lewiston on Tuesday for a doubleheader to open IEL play.

Post Falls finally opens season at Richland mixer 

RICHLAND, Wash. — After being rained out in their first two scheduled doubleheaders, the Trojans completed a couple games Saturday at the Richland mixer, losing 10-0 to Hermiston (Ore.) and beating Liberty Christian of Richland at Columbia Playfields. 

Rylan Morrison struck out five and allowed two hits over four innings for Post Falls against Liberty Christian. She also went 2 for 3 with an RBI and run scored.  

Natalie Stroud went 3 for 3 with a triple, two singles, an RBI and three runs scored for the Trojans. Stroud, Morrison, Jaya Felix, Charlie Wasson each had RBI singles, and Keana Peahu-Michael and Lexie McCarroll had run-scoring doubles in an 11-run first inning. 

Post Falls travels to Lewiston on Thursday for a doubleheader to open IEL play.

CALDWELL — Abby Helmholz struck out nine, and went 2 for 4 with three RBIs in the first game as the Hawks beat McCall-Donnelly 10-4 in their first game of the Win The Pitch Classic at Vallivue High.

Helmholz hit a two-run single in the second for Lakeland. 

Raygen Dutton went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.  

In the second game, Centennial scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth and last inning, capped by a two-run single by Josie Moorhouse, to beat Lakeland 13-11. 

Kiersten Drake hit a two-run single in the first inning for the Hawks. 

Lakeland travels to Sandpoint on Tuesday for an IEL doubleheader.
