Teen suffers burns in kitchen fire

A teen was injured and several people were displaced in an apartment fire Wednesday.

Craig Etherton, Coeur d'Alene deputy fire marshal, said a wax fire ignited about 3 p.m. when a resident was making candles at Riverstone Place Apartments on John Loop Road.

He said the girl sustained burns to her hands trying to put out the fire. Sprinklers activated, dousing the blaze.

Etherton said the structural fire damage was minimal, but water damage was more substantial, as water flowed into two units below. He said residents of the affected apartments were put in touch with Red Cross about temporary housing.

Damage estimates ranged from $5,000 to $50,000, Etherton said, depending on repairs needed to make the units livable again, which could take weeks.

A GoFundMe account under "Haley and Emma" has been established to help the mother and daughter who lived in the apartment where the fire started.
