A love that spanned the ages: Remembering Ralph and Nancy Haak
Nancy (Polhemus) Haak, 90, of Rocky River, Ohio, died March 6, 2025, surrounded by family in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Her beloved husband, Ralph Haak, 88, of Cleveland, Ohio, followed her in death March 8, 2025, also surrounded by family in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
Ralph and Nancy’s extraordinary love story began with a blind date in Cleveland, Ohio — a serendipitous meeting that would change their lives forever. From that first encounter, their connection blossomed into a bond that stood the test of time. Married for 63 wonderful years, they shared a life filled with love, faith and devotion. Two days apart, they left this world together, just as they had lived — in an unwavering commitment to one another. Ralph, true to his vow of “until death do us part,” lovingly cared for Nancy with steadfast loyalty until her final moments. Shortly after, he followed her, ready to join her in eternal rest.
Ralph built an exceptional career as a structural and civil engineer, making significant contributions to the mining industry. His expertise and commitment carried him to diverse locations, from the mountains of Colorado to the deserts of Arizona and Nevada, and even a transformative eight-month project in the Philippines. Nancy, a warm and meticulous soul, brought her steadfast dedication to every role she held, excelling as a secretary in the steel industry, at the University of Arizona, and at Mercy Ambulance. Together, they created a legacy enriched by three children, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren — each one a source of immense pride and joy.
Ralph and Nancy’s family was the cornerstone of their lives, but their circle of care extended far beyond. They embraced friends, near and far, with a unique ability to make everyone feel valued as if time itself slowed when you were in their presence. Their home was a warm and inviting haven where love and kindness flourished.
Exploration and adventure were woven into their story, as they delighted in scenic road trips to visit loved ones, discover new places, and capture memories through photography. Nancy’s creative and fun-loving soul brought color, laughter, and joy wherever she went. Through painting, crafting beautiful cards, and her remarkable sense of humor — held tightly to the end — Nancy spread light and happiness to those around her.
Ralph, ever the steady and thoughtful presence, found great satisfaction in tending to his garden, a peaceful pursuit that reflected his care and dedication. He also remained informed on current events and faithfully attended church services with Nancy by his side. Together, they spent cherished moments marveling at God’s creation, whether exploring bird preserves or riding scenic tourist trains. Their partnership was a testament to enduring love, laughter, and shared purpose.
Ralph and Nancy exemplified Christ-like kindness, generosity, and deep compassion in every aspect of their lives. Guided by unwavering faith in God, they faced life’s joys and challenges with humility and strength, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion that will live on in the hearts of all who knew them. Though their physical presence will be deeply missed, the memories and lessons they shared remain a source of comfort, inspiration, and hope.
