DATA CENTERS: Many don’t use large amounts of water
The story about a moratorium on data centers doesn’t ring accurate to me. I worked in very large data centers in my career and none of them used large amounts of water for cooling. They all had closed-loop systems where the air handlers in the computer rooms dumped the heat to water which was circulated to outside cooling towers. Those cooling towers dumped the heat to the outside air via radiators and fans much like those in cars, just a heck of a lot bigger. If Google is using city water to cool their data centers, then shame on the city for letting them do that.
