PREP ROUNDUP: Lake City softball opens with split

• SOFTBALL

SPOKANE VALLEY — Junior Karsyn DeMent went 4 for 5 and drove in three runs as the Lake City Timberwolves beat the University Titans 12-4 in the second game to earn a split of their season-opening doubleheader. 

University won the opener 12-2 in five innings. 

DeMent hit a two-run single in a six-run sixth inning for Lake City. Layla Gugino went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, including a two-run double in the fifth for the T-Wolves. 

In the first game, senior Mariah Thomas hit a solo home run in the third inning, and freshman Brooklyn Caan added an RBI triple. Thomas also had a pair of RBI singles in the second game. 

“It was awesome getting out on the field so early in season and getting these two games in,” Lake City coach Jordyn Hensley said. “We saw a lot of positive things that we are excited to build on. Madeline (Peterson) pitched an incredible game two. And our bats came out hot for some timely hits today.” 

Lake City travels to Lakeland on Tuesday for a doubleheader to open Inland Empire League play.

SPOKANE — Freshman Shae Jones struck out 12 and freshman Preston Gardner hit a two-run double in the fifth to put the visiting Tigers ahead in a win over the Eagles in their season opener. 

“I thought we battled well,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “We have a super young team; you could tell we had some nerves. But we came together and got our first win, and I think we'll build on it.” 

Timberlake plays at Riverside of Chattaroy, Wash., on Monday.

LEWISTON — Senior Addyson Stewart went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored as the Lumberjacks scored four times in the bottom of the last inning of the second game to beat the Bengal JV and split their season-opening doubleheader. 

Addilyn Turner hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth in the nightcap for St. Maries. 

Stewart hit a solo homer in the first inning, added a two-run double in the third and an RBI double in the sixth. 

Lewiston is scheduled to play Kendrick and the Lakeland junior varsity today to conclude tourney play.

• TRACK AND FIELD

Carr finishes 11th at Nike Nationals

NEW YORK — Coeur d’Alene sophomore Wyatt Carr, representing the North Idaho Distance Project, was the top local finisher, taking 11th in the boys 2-mile championship at the Nike Indoor Nationals at the Nike Track and Field Center. 

Carr finished in 8 minutes, 59.02 seconds. Coeur d’Alene senior Zack Cervi-Skinner was 14th in 9:00.13 and senior Max Cervi-Skinner 16th in 9:01.83. Tommy Latham of Georgia won the race in 8:44.35. Carr was also 12th in the boys 3,000 championship En Route race, finishing in 8:26. Max Cervi-Skinner was 20th in 8:29.42 and Zack Cervi-Skinner 21st in 8:29.80. 

Coeur d’Alene junior Dakota Keyworth was 38th in the girls 2-mile Emerging Elite race in 12:40.54, as well as the 3,000 Emerging Elite En Route race in 11:48.39. 

Avalon Beltran of Colorado won the 2-mile in 10:58.72, as well as the 3,000 race (10:17.99). 

The event continues through Sunday.

POTLATCH — The host Loggers scored the go-ahead run on an error in the bottom of the fifth inning of a nonleague game against the Tigers. 

Junior Eric Wylie had a two-run double in the first inning for Timberlake, which committed six errors. 

Sophomore Nate Beardsall had seven strikeouts, senior Ethan Pecor seven for Timberlake (2-1), which hosts Priest River on Thursday. 

Waylan Marshall had three hits and three runs scored for Potlatch in its season opener.

PRIEST RIVER — Amado Stewart singled to score Peyton Lingo with two out in the bottom of the first inning to give the Lumberjacks a 2-0 lead, but the Spartans took the lead for good on an RBI single by Philippe Paschetag in the second inning in the season and Central Idaho League opener for both at Priest River Junior High. 

Kaiden McMurrian had three hits for St. Maries, which hosts the Post Falls JV on Tuesday.
