‘I Never Saw Another Butterfly’ opens tonight at Lake City Playhouse
Lake City Playhouse's production of Celeste Raspanti's poignant play, "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," opens at 7:30 tonight and will have a limited run through March 30.
Directed by Jessica Peterson, this production brings to life the true stories of Jewish children who lived through the horrors of the Holocaust in the Terezin concentration camp. Over 15,000 Jewish children passed through Terezin, and only about 100 were still alive when Terezin was liberated at the end of World War II.
Based on historical accounts, "I Never Saw Another Butterfly" depicts the lives of young victims of the Holocaust, exploring themes of innocence, survival and the unbreakable human spirit. Through a combination of dramatic storytelling and poignant imagery, the play honors the memories of those lost and the resilience of those who lived through one of history's darkest times.
"I Never Saw Another Butterfly" sheds light on the beauty of art and memory, even amid suffering. Lake City Playhouse officials say it is a must-see for audiences of all ages.
“It’s a deeply emotional and sobering experience,” Peterson said in a Monday news release.
“The audience will learn about Terezin through the eyes of children, each of whom did their own research about the ghetto and the atrocities that took place," she said.
The cast features an ensemble of local actors whose performances bring to life the emotional weight of this historical narrative. Audiences will experience the heart-wrenching journey of the young characters, portrayed with compassion and depth.
Tickets are available through the Lake City Playhouse box office: $30 for adults and $27 for seniors and military.
Lake City Playhouse is at 1320 E. Garden Ave. The show will run every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon through close.
