TWIN LAKES — Area students participated Friday in the Idaho Exhibition of Ideas during the North Idaho Student Showcase at Twin Lakes Elementary School.
Sponsored by the Idaho Eco-system, the IDX Challenge tasked students with exploring the theme of agricultural sciences.
The IDX Challenge is a team-based digital design and fabrication competition where students research problems, interview experts and practice design, iteration and rapid prototyping skills using 3D printing technology. Teams chose problems concerning agriculture and presented their ideas to a team of judges. Students delivered speeches and PowerPoint presentations and prepared poster board exhibits to accompany their models.
Students from the Lakeland Joint School District brought home several awards. Lakeland Middle School came in first place in the senior division for seventh and eighth graders. Timberlake Middle School came in second. "The system contains a nearby sprinkler with a pipe that runs to a large above ground water tank. The tank will also have minerals to provide the plant with nutrients."
John Brown Elementary School's team came in second place in the junior division with "The Apple Saver" during Friday's IDX Challenge at Twin Lakes Elementary School. "This device holds pheromones to attract apple maggot flies and codling moths," the team's idea description reads. "It then traps the pests and drowns the larva in bacillus thuringiensis."
