STATE HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Post Falls back on top ... Trojans win first state title since 2020, sixth since 2015

| March 2, 2025 1:30 AM

POCATELLO — Before leaving for state Thursday morning, interim Post Falls wrestling coach Jeremy Zender told his team that they were capable to doing something amazing.

When the dust settled on the ICCU Dome on Saturday, it might have been a surprise to some, but not those in orange and black.

Post Falls, with two individual champions and program-record 16 placers, captured its first state wrestling title since 2020, winning the 6A crown with 320.5 points.

“We’ve got great kids that have been working hard and buying into what we’ve been selling all year,” Zender said. “They wrestled for something bigger than them all year. And good things happen when you do that.”

Post Falls scored a state record 338.5 points in winning the 2018 title. The Trojans won three straight from 2018-20. It was Post Falls' sixth state title, all since 2015.

“Bringing 20 guys, and placing 16 with a couple of guys on the verge, it was great to see,” Zender said. “I told them I thought everyone had a chance to place, and I wasn’t blowing smoke. They almost proved me right.”

6A: Senior Seth Martin, who has signed with North Idaho College, capped a 53-0 season, pinning Jean-Luc Guerra from Mountain View of Meridian in the 190-pound final.

“It’s pretty big for me,” Martin said. “I couldn’t have done it without my teammates and coaches pushing me the entire way. It really comes down to who’s helping in hard times and it’s been my teammates, coaches and Jesus Christ.”

Post Falls finished second the past two years at state, and was third in 2021 and '22.

“It’s indescribable,” Martin said. “We’ve been hunting the title for four years, and got it done. I know we’ll have some fun tonight.”

Sophomore Matthew Hamilton and freshman Ryker Allen of Post Falls often practice together during the season as they compete at the same weight of 113 pounds.

Saturday, it was a little different as the two met in the 6A title match.

“When you’re wrestling someone that knows you, you know what they’re going to do,” said Hamilton, who notched a 5-2 win over Allen. “Winning a title felt pretty good, but it’s really special for all the seniors to have a ring to go with it as well.”

Other Post Falls placers included freshman Tristan Mendenhall (fifth at 98), junior Gage Loftin (fourth at 106), freshman Sawyer Sage (second at 126), junior Brandon Felix (fourth at 132), senior Rider Seguine (second at 138), senior Tanner Piper (fourth at 150), senior Kyle Miller (fifth at 157), junior Colton Austin (sixth at 157), junior Damion Hamilton (second at 165), senior Trey Smith (fourth at 175), junior Zane Smith (fifth at 190), senior Kendall Sage (fourth at 215) and junior Xander Scholes (third at 285).

Seguine, bidding for his fourth straight individual title, lost 8-2 to Sean Hall from Canyon Ridge in Twin Falls.

“He went out and fought hard,” Zender said of Seguine. “If you were in the wrestling world, that was a match you wanted to see. Both of them went out and put it on the line. It was a battle and great match. I know he’s upset, but he can learn from it and springboard him into his college career and chase those college goals.”

A caravan for the state championship team is planned for today, from the Kootenai Fire Station on Seltice Way to the school at 3 p.m. for anyone interested in greeting the team upon its return from Pocatello.

Coeur d’Alene senior Colton Tucker nabbed his first title, beating Rocky Mountain sophomore Tyler Irish by pin in 3:49 in the 157-pound final.

“He was just dominant all weekend and wrestled outstanding,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “It was good to see the fruits of his labor pay off. He’s a student of the game and wanted to be a state champion. Two years ago, he changed some things about his conditioning and really had a good year. I’m really happy for him.”

Tucker said that the nerves got to him early on, but not once he got going.

“After the Walk of Champions, having to watch the other matches and wait, I got really nervous,” Tucker said. “I got a hard workout in, and all the nerves went away. I came into the tournament going for No. 1, had a lot of preparation and felt it was just inevitable it was going to happen.”

In last Friday’s District 1 tournament, Post Falls junior Damion Hamilton beat Coeur d’Alene sophomore Brock Armstrong 9-6 for the district title.

On Saturday, Armstrong notched a 4-3 win over Hamilton for the 165-pound title.

“The best opponents are going to bring out the best in you,” Armstrong said. “You never want to run from anyone, no matter how highly skilled they are. I just wanted to be patient and wanted the match to unfold how I wanted it to.”

Freshman Nash Larsen (fifth at 106) and senior Gabe Larsen (third at 157) also placed for Coeur d’Alene, which finished fifth with 112 points, missing a trophy by one place.

“When you’ve got hard workers in the wrestling room, it gives you a chance to be competitive,” Moffat said. “We’re not happy with fifth. For whatever reason, we came out flat and for some of our guys, it was hard to watch guys they’d beaten throughout the season on the podium. We had high expectations, and this wasn’t it. Our guys know the expectations and a lot of programs would be happy with fifth, but we’re not. But those two champs made it worth it.”

Lake City coach Corey Owen has coached Garrett Leonard since he was in first grade.

Saturday night, it was just perfect.

Leonard, who has signed to play football at NAIA College of Idaho in Caldwell, closed out a 53-0 season, beating Madison’s Porter Cottle 4-1 in the 215-pound championship match.

“He’s such a neat kid,” Owen said. “He had such a high goal for this season, and sometimes it doesn’t work out. That Madison kid was a big, physical kid and I was very nervous going into that match. But Garrett handled it like he has all year. He’s worked so hard and earned everything he got tonight.”

Leonard beat Braeden Harvey of Mead in the Tri-State Invitational final in December.

“I just had the confidence to carry it through from that match on,” Leonard said. “I could have widened the gap, but wanted to make it my match and just dominated. It was a great ending to my career.”

Senior Nathan Booth was runner-up at 175 and senior Sebastian Mosman sixth at 285 for Lake City, which finished 11th.

5A: Once Lakeland sophomore Carson Leonard got moving on Saturday, he wasn’t going to be denied as he pinned Century senior Gabe Pyne in 2:40 at 120 pounds for his second straight state title.

“I just felt really good on my feet and in my leg attacks,” Leonard said. “I knew I had my matches aced when I got on top.”

Leonard won at 113 pounds last year.

“This year was more stressful, but I wrestled 10 times better than last year,” Leonard said. “I’ve just been making constant improvements and wrestled a lot better this year.”

“He spends a lot of time on the mat, and it’s pretty clear in the really big matches,” Lakeland coach Will Edelblute said. “In those matches, he’s just better than anyone in the state.”

Lakeland sophomore Zach Teal knew there was a lot of pressure being the top seed at 98 pounds.

But then again, he was ready for it.

Teal pinned Minico sophomore Alex Vega in 1:06 for his first title.

“I just wanted to make my coaches and family proud,” Teal said. “There’s definitely a lot of pressure and people are expecting a lot out of you. I just tried to go for a shot and he sprawled out. Once I got him into a cradle, I knew I had the match.”

“Zach was just dominant,” Edelblute said. “He might have been nervous, but he was sharp once that first whistle blew, the nerves disappeared.”

With his 150th career varsity win coming in the semifinals with a 15-7 win by major decision, senior Jorden Tyler only had one more thing to accomplish before ending his career at Sandpoint — win a state championship.

Tyler did just that, beating Preston Sonner-Cranney of Minico, who he lost to in last year's 4A (now 5A) 195-pound state title match. Sonner-Cranney is a two-time state champion.

After a 0-0 stalemate to end the first period, Tyler, who finished with a 45-4 record, scored 11 of his 15 points with two takedowns and a 4-point near-fall in the second period en route to a 15-5 win by major decision.

"Incredible season ... you really couldn't put a stamp on it any better than what Jorden Tyler did today," Sandpoint coach Josh Ratigan said. "The way he beat his opponent was dominant. Anything he wanted to do he did and that's a testament to a kid that's as coachable as it gets. Truly one of the hardest workers I've ever had the privilege to coach. He's going to be a hard one to not have again."

Junior Caleb Adams (fifth at 106), senior Jaren Knopp (fourth at 126), junior Kalab Hammer (fourth at 157) and senior Thayer Sabatke (sixth at 165) placed for Lakeland, which finished fourth with 137.5 points.

Junior Jackson Holman was second at 215, freshman Zak Wood (third at 120) and junior Charlie Becker (fourth at 175) for Sandpoint, which finished fifth with 124.5 points.

4A: Timberlake junior Wyatt Carey finished runner-up at 106 for the second straight year as the Tigers finished ninth.

Sophomore Colton D’Avanzo (fourth at 98), senior Paul Sundstrom (fifth at 126), sophomore Chris Schmidt (fifth at 150), freshman Joseph Torr (sixth at 165), senior Jonathan Hansen (third at 175) and senior Briley Arnett (sixth at 215) also placed for Timberlake.

Fruitland won the team title with 294.5 points.

3A:  St. Maries junior Aiden Yearout had prepared himself all year for tough situations.

So, as Yearout held a 6-5 lead late in his 165-pound final, he got tough and held on for the win.

“He just stayed positive all the way through,” St. Maries coach Dennis Humphrey said. “He was confident on his feet, and I was proud of his composure all the way through.”

“I just felt like I broke him,” Yearout said. “I knew I wanted it more, practiced harder and trained harder so that when things get tight, I’m ready for it.”

Junior Zach David finished runner-up at 157, sophomore Kelby Harvey fourth at 132 and senior Jerrett Brebner fourth at 144 for St. Maries, which finished tied for eighth with West Side with 91.5 points.

“We’re pleased with where we finished,” Humphrey said. “We lose three seniors, two that qualified for state, so we’re looking good for the future.”

Heading into the 144-pound championship match, Priest River senior Colm McLaimtaig had won 36 out of his last 37 matches — with his last loss coming to his opponent in the final, Stellar Tew of West Side, at the Kooskia Duals on Jan. 24.

Down 3-2 heading into the third period, McLaimtaig was able to spin into a 2-point reversal and held on for a 4-3 win. Tew held a 50-3 record coming into the match and was on a 24-match winning streak. McLaimtaig ended the season with a 52-5 record, closing with 27 straight wins.

Malad won the team title with 211.5 points. Kellogg was third with 160.5.

GIRLS: Lake City senior Alexxis Johnson had been thinking a lot about her moment the past seven years.

On Saturday, she got to live it.

Johnson beat Tri-Valley's Charlee Noah 8-4 for the 120-pound title, becoming the Timberwolves’ first state girls champion in program history.

“It’s a dream come true,” Johnson said. “I was just focused on being patient and finishing my moves. I just kept pressing knowing that it would eventually come.”

“She was really putting pressure on herself at the start of the year,” Lake City girls coach Nathan DeLeon said. “I told her none of it matters until the state tournament, and she just started putting everything together. I told her there wasn’t anyone I’d rather have in that position than her. She’s been wrestling great and wrestled tough all weekend.”

Timberlake junior Shelby Garten finished runner-up at 126 pounds.

Coeur d’Alene junior Brooklyn Anderson was third at 165.

Sandpoint junior Lili Marti was third at 235, senior Sylvia Becker (sixth at 165) and sophomore Izzy Stark (sixth at 126) placed for the Bulldogs, who were seventh.

For Post Falls, freshman Kahli Brown (third at 132) and sophomore Isabella Rice (sixth at 107) helped the Trojans finish 10th.

Rocky Mountain won the girls team title with 106.5 points.
