STATE WRESTLING TOURNAMENTS: 'Starting from scratch' .... Post Falls just 1.5 points behind four-time defending state champion Meridian heading into final day

POCATELLO — Today is a new day and a chance for someone to do something amazing. 

Or as first-year Post Falls coach Jeremy Zender put it, the start of a whole new state 6A wrestling tournament. 

Post Falls, with 19 wrestlers still alive, trails four-time defending champion Meridian 159.5 points to 158 for the team title at ICCU Arena after the first day at state. 

“It’s almost like a whole new tournament right now,” Zender said. “We’ve whittled it down and we’re starting again tomorrow. Meridian’s down to 18 guys, and we’ve got 19, so it’s like we’re starting from scratch tomorrow.” 

Tristan Mendenhall (98 pounds), Gage Loftin (106), Matthew Hamilton (113), Ryker Allen (113), Sawyer Sage (126), Brandon Felix (126), Rider Seguine (138), Colton Austin (157), Damion Hamilton (165), Trey Smith (175) and Seth Martin (190) advanced to the semifinal round for Post Falls, which is seeking its first team title since 2020, the final year of a Trojan three-peat.

Seguine is shooting for his fourth state title. Seth Martin is a returning state champ.

“It was a pretty good day today,” Zender said. “It’s really just a testament to how hard these guys are wrestling and working right now.” 

Colton Tucker (150), Gabe Larsen (157) and Brock Armstrong (165) advanced to the semis for Coeur d’Alene, which is seventh with 62 points. 

“We had a really disappointing start to the day in the first round,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “We started flat for some reason today, and in my 28 years of coming here, it might have been the flattest I’ve seen a wrestling team come out. We’re proud that we battled back, but we dug ourselves a big hole and it’s going to take something to get out of it. Hopefully we come out with a little bit of a fire tomorrow.” 

The top four teams bring home trophies.

Lake City has three semifinalists: Nathan Booth (175), Garrett Leonard (215) and Sebastian Mosman (285). 

In the 5A tournament, Lakeland advanced Zach Teal (98 pounds), defending champion Carson Leonard (120), Jaren Knopp (126) and Kalab Hammer (157) to the semis. Lakeland is fifth with 76 points. Minico of Rupert leads with 122 points. 

In the 4A tournament, Timberlake’s Colton D’Avanzo (98 pounds), Wyatt Carey (106), Jonathan Hansen (175) and Briley Arnett (215) advanced to the semifinals. Timberlake is eighth with 72.5 points. Defending champion Fruitland leads with 161 points. 

In the 3A tournament, Johnny Stovern (106), Kevin Watson (106), Colton Storey (113), Carsun Hinkelmann (120), Wyatt Storey (132) and Brady Vergobbi (138) advanced to the semifinals for Kellogg, which is third with 84 points. 

Jerrett Brebner (144), Zach David (157) and Aiden Yearout (165) advanced to the semifinals for St. Maries, which is eighth with 46 points. 

In the girls tournament, Lake City's Alexxis Johnson (120 pounds) and Post Falls' Kahli Brown (126) advanced to the semifinal round. 

The tournament concludes today, with championship finals scheduled for 3 p.m. PST.
