PREP ROUNDUP: Barta pushes St. Maries past Orofino

• BOYS BASKETBALL

OROFINO — Junior Jack Barta made 8 of 9 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter for the St. Maries Lumberjacks in a 63-52 win over the Orofino Maniacs in Central Idaho League play at Orofino High on Thursday. 

“Our defense really got going in the second half,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “JJ (Yearout) did a good job on (Hudson) Schneider, holding him scoreless in the second half and shutting him down. We had some nice balance tonight as well, which was good to see.” 

Barta finished with 15 points, Yearout had 13 points, six rebounds and three assists, Isaiah Gustaffe scored 10 points and Landon Riberich had 10 points and seven rebounds for St. Maries (7-7, 4-1 CIL), which faces the Coeur d’Alene JV today at 4:30 p.m. at North Idaho College. 

Quinton Naranjo scored 14 points for Orofino (3-11, 2-4), which visits Kellogg on Saturday.

HARRISON FLATS — Senior Christopher Moore had a game-high 27 points, but the rest of the Warriors managed just 15 in a nonleague loss to the Wampus Cats at Kootenai High. 

"Flat as a pancake is how I can describe how my boys played this evening; there was no energy and no team play whatsoever," Kootenai coach Tim Tucker said.

Junior Owen Howard had 25 points and 20 rebounds for Clark Fork (3-8), which travels to Lakeside on Saturday. 

Sophomore Logan Strobel had six points and seven rebounds for Kootenai (2-10), which hosts Mullan in a North Star League game on Tuesday.

BONNERS FERRY — Junior Kyleigh Wolfe scored a game-high 39 points for the Knights, who fell to the Badgers at Bonners Ferry High. 

Bonners Ferry led 76-74 with under a minute remaining. Wolfe missed a go-ahead 3-pointer and Makenna Baisden was able to make two free throws to stretch the advantage. 

Freshman Laila Charley scored 12 points for Lakeside (9-7), which hosts Clark Fork in Scenic Idaho Conference play on Saturday. 

Taren Bateman and Sydney Hinthorn scored 22 points each for Bonners Ferry (11-7), which faces Genesis Prep tonight at The Courts in Post Falls.
