PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Adams out as Cd'A boys basketball coach

| January 30, 2025 1:30 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Jon Adams is no longer the head boys basketball coach at Coeur d’Alene High, athletic director Victoria Beecher said Wednesday in a letter to “Coeur d’Alene High School Basketball Families.”

“While decisions like this are never easy, we believe this change is in the best interest of our student-athletes and the long-term success of the program,” Beecher wrote.

Beecher did not respond to messages from The Press asking if Adams resigned or was fired.

“I’m very proud of what we accomplished at CHS in the past five years,” Adams said in a statement to The Press. “From the on-court success to the community support. The creation of our Junior Vikings program, kids camps and the annual Summer Shootout — we’ve put CHS basketball back on the map. This news totally blindsided me and my family. I still haven’t received a clear explanation why. It’s disappointing when a few disgruntled parents can inflict so much damage to a program that’s sole purpose is to provide athletic opportunities to kids, It’s equally disappointing when your administration doesn’t support your program ambitions and protect its coaches from outside influences. I love our kids. I will always be here for them and will be following their careers and lives closely.”

Coeur d’Alene is 8-8, 2-4 in the Inland Empire League, and sitting third among the three 6A teams in the league.

Adams, a 1991 Coeur d’Alene High grad, was in his fifth season as the Vikings head coach. He was 67-37 at CHS. Last year, the Vikings finished 21-5, won their first league title since 2016, won their first outright league crown since 2014, won their first regional title since 2011 and advanced to state for the first time since 2012.

At state, Coeur d’Alene reached the semifinals before losing in overtime, then lost the next day in the third-place game.

Arnold Brown, the former Shadle Park head coach who joined Adams’ staff at Coeur d’Alene last season, will be interim coach for the remainder of the season, Beecher said.

Coeur d’Alene’s next scheduled game is Friday at 6 p.m. vs. Bonners Ferry at North Idaho College.
