Fire department responds to record calls in 2024

| January 29, 2025 1:00 AM

The Coeur d’Alene Fire Department responded to 10,591 emergency calls in 2024, a 5.7% increase over 2023 and a 35% increase over the last 10 years.

Fire Station 2 on Ramsey Road was once again the busiest fire station in the city, having 7,129 unit responses between Engine 2 and Medic 32, a Tuesday press release said.

In 2024, 38% of calls for service in the city included at least one unit from Fire Station 2.

In 2015, Station 2 had 6,118 unit responses between Engine 2 and Medic 32.

While EMS calls accounted for 74% of service calls, structure fires continued to increase this past year, with 91 calls for service dispatched as structure fires.

Thirty five of the reported structure fires were deemed to be working structure fires, and nine of those fires went to a second alarm requiring additional resources and mutual aid units.

In comparison, 48 structure fires were reported in 2015.

Coeur d'Alene Fire received assistance from mutual aid units on 297 incidents and provided mutual aid assistance to neighbors for 280 incidents in 2024.

Six individual firefighters responded to over 1,000 calls for service each.

A survey to gauge community support for a general obligation bond for the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department is underway.

Total costs of a 10-year bond that could go to voters in May are pegged at $16.4 million in a fire department bond outline, but that amount could change.

The department is looking at needs that include a new fire engine, ladder truck, command vehicles, the update and expansion of several stations and perhaps even rebuilding one.
