NIC SOFTBALL: Cardinals win in return to NJCAA play

HENDERSON, Nev. — Maliyah Mann, a freshman from University High in Spokane, allowed three hits while striking out nine for North Idaho College in a 7-2 win over the College of Southern Nevada on Friday in the Southern Nevada Kickoff Classic. 

Kristine Schmidt, a sophomore from Coeur d’Alene High, allowed one run over three innings, striking out two for NIC in the debut of coach Michael Garroutte, who took over for Shay Chapman, who stepped down following last season. 

NIC is returning to the NJCAA and Scenic West Athletic Conference play this season after moving to the Northwest Athletic Conference in 2017.

Sophomore catcher Corine Doran went 4 for 4 with three RBIs in the win. 

Later, NIC fell to Arizona Western 12-3. Further information was not available. 

NIC is scheduled to face Northeastern and Yavapai today to conclude the tournament.
