PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Lewiston rallies past Lakeland in fourth quarter

RATHDRUM – The Lakeland Hawks led by seven points at halftime, but the visiting Lewiston Bengals outscored the hosts 15-8 in the fourth quarter to escape with a 48-47 Inland Empire League victory between 5A schools Tuesday night at Hawk Court. 

Brayden Carrel had 20 points and eight rebounds for Lakeland (7-7, 1-4 IEL), which missed a shot to win it at the buzzer. 

Blaze Hepburn and Parker Bogar each scored 10 points for Lewiston (13-1, 2-0). 

Gabe Harris had eight points and seven rebounds for Lakeland, which travels to Moscow on Saturday.

SPIRIT LAKE — Tyler Engelson, who finished with 11 points, hit a jumper to give the Tigers the lead for good with 1:45 remaining in a nonleague win over the Wildcats at Timberlake High. 

“It was a good team win tonight,” Timberlake coach Mike LaFountaine said. “Our defensive intensity was what got us a win tonight.” 

Brant Rush and Lucas Vallieres — who finished with 16 points — hit free throws down the stretch for Timberlake (6-7), which plays Genesis Prep at The Courts in Post Falls on Thursday. 

Brodie Robinson scored 17 points, Draeden Taylor 15 points for Kellogg (7-6), which hosts Grangeville on Jan. 31. 

“We struggled to string stops together,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin said. “Timberlake did a good job of getting into their stuff and getting downhill. We didn’t have our best stuff defensively, but to have a shot, I was happy with the kids.”

ST. MARIES — Junior Isaiah Gustaffe had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Lumberjacks in a battle for the Central Idaho League lead against the Spartans at St. Maries High. 

“We really just shot poorly in the second half,” said St. Maries coach Bryan Chase, whose team finished 17 of 73 and 3 of 22 from the 3-point line. “We couldn’t get anything to fall. We did a nice job of rebounding, but had a hard time finishing. Priest River’s senior leadership was really good and they just wanted it more in the second half, and it kind of propelled them.” 

JJ Yearout had nine points and three steals, Jack Barta four assists for St. Maries (6-6, 3-1 CIL), which travels to Bonners Ferry on Friday. 

Nate Stiffel scored 14 points for Priest River (11-4, 4-1), which hosts Orofino on Friday.

Jayden Pluff and Lorell Mitchell each scored 12 points for Lakeside (8-4), which lost at Potlatch 66-62 in its last game, on Jan. 9. 

Everett Lovell hit six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 35 points for Potlatch (7-6).
