PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Sandpoint trips Lakeland at buzzer

| January 18, 2025 1:20 AM

SANDPOINT — After grabbing a missed 3-pointer in the waning seconds, Sandpoint’s Wil Leisy put up a 15-footer that was ruled to have beaten the buzzer as the Bulldogs beat the Lakeland Hawks 51-49 in the boys Battle for the Paddle spirit basketball game Friday night at Les Rogers Court.

Peyton Hillman scored 14 points, Brayden Carrel 13 and seven rebounds for Lakeland (7-6, 1-3 Inland Empire League), which led 40-36 after three quarters.

"I’m proud of our kids and the energy they played with in a great basketball environment for both schools, but you got to get that call at the end right," Lakeland coach Caleb De Fabiis said. "We can argue fouls all day long because they are judgment calls but we have to get that right. But hats off to Sandpoint and we will see them again in a few weeks. We will regroup from this and be ready to go Tuesday night."

Logan Roos scored a game-high 18 points for Sandpoint (5-7, 1-1). Leisy finished with 12 points, Emerik Jones 11 for the Bulldogs.

After the game, Lakeland was awarded the Paddle as the winner of the spirit competition.

Lakeland plays host to Lewiston on Tuesday.
