PREP WRESTLING: Trojans win fight, claim River City title
POST FALLS — First-year Trojan coach Jeremy Zender knew that his team was going to be for a battle when they saw Mead advance to the championship match of the River City Duals at Post Falls High on Saturday.
“Mead’s a tough team, and (Mead coach) Phil (McLean) always has them ready to roll,” Zender said. “We knew we’d be in a dogfight.”
In the championship match, Post Falls beat Mead 46-28, winning the team title, the program’s ninth since the tournament began in 1998.
“The guys competed in every position,” Zender said. “It was awesome to see that level of competition and the guys continue to get better.”
Rider Seguine (138 pounds), Trey Smith (175), Seth Martin (190), Xander Scholes (285) and Matthew Hamilton (113) finished unbeaten for Post Falls, which hosts Lewiston on Wednesday.
“I think we’re in the right spot mentally going into the final six weeks and the guys are continuing to get better,” Zender said. “They’re wrestling fearless and trying to score points. We’re heading in the right direction now.”
Coeur d’Alene beat Lakeland 53-27 to finish third. Jordan Schield (138), Logan Bradley (144), Colton Tucker (150), Brock Armstrong (165) and Rocco White (113) went unbeaten for the Vikings.
“Our guys wrestled hard all weekend, with seven duals in three days,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “I thought we were a little sluggish against Lakeland, but they did a good job overall. We’ve still got some things to work on, but I really like what I saw out of our guys.”
Garrett Leonard went unbeaten at 215 for Lake City, which finished 12th in the 32-team tournament.
