• BOYS BASKETBALL

COEUR d’ALENE — Sometimes, it comes down to whoever lands the last blow.

On Tuesday, it was Post Falls that did just enough.

Junior Connor Carver scored a team-high 22 points and Tyras Blake added 16 points for the Trojans, who held off the host Coeur d’Alene Vikings 67-63 in an Inland Empire League game at Viking Court on Tuesday.

Junior Caden Symons scored 29 points for Coeur d’Alene (6-5, 1-1 IEL).

“Coeur d’Alene is so good and talented and can score at any level,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “Caden is such an experienced player and he was phenomenal tonight.”

Post Falls (11-5, 3-0) led 61-55 before Coeur d’Alene senior Carter Rupp hit a 3-pointer with 1:14 remaining. Senior Trenton McLean iced the game for the Trojans from the foul line with a pair of free throws with 8.5 seconds remaining.

“I’m really, really proud of my boys,” Mike McLean said. “We did a good job of grinding one out and making enough plays and making our free throws down the stretch. It’s a tough environment to go and play in, and I’m really proud of my guys.”

Rupp scored 20 points for Coeur d’Alene, which hosts Lake City in the Fight for the Fish spirit game on Friday.

“Hats off to Post Falls,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said. Their bigs (Blake and Carver) really stretched us out and they shot the lights out. They were really evenly distributed scoring and we really had two guys score our points. We need a little more equity in our scoring and need to be a little more committed to that in our next game.”

Post Falls led 10-6 after the first quarter, where Colvin was held scoreless.

“We’ve yet to get a good start in a game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Stacy Boyd said. “Once we do, we’ll be hitting on all four cylinders. I just think right now, they’re trying to figure things out. New system and new coach. I told them everyone wants to beat them and they’ve got a target on their back with back-to-back state championships.”

For us to play the way we did, we’re really excited about our fight and felt we competed hard. When you play an opponent with that kind of talent, you’ve got to answer it.”
