PREP WRESTLING: Sandpoint's Tyler rallies for Rollie Lane title

| January 5, 2025 1:15 AM

NAMPA — With 13 seconds remaining, Sandpoint High senior Jorden Tyler trailed 7-4 to three-time Oregon state champion Easton Kemper.

As the clock ticked down, Tyler spun into a two-point reversal and was eventually granted a four-point near-fall, claiming the 195-pound title 10-7 in the annual Rollie Lane Invitational at the Ford Idaho Center on Saturday.

"Emotionally, watching the way he finished, do what he did, it's just unreal — it's hard to put into words," Sandpoint coach Josh Ratigan said. "He just put it all together at once ... he had roughly 13 seconds and scored six points."

Earlier, Tyler beat two-time Idaho state champion Preston Sonner-Cranney of Minico with a second-round pin. Tyler lost to Sonner-Cranney by a 4-2 decision in the state 4A title match last year.

"That's more than big, beating someone you know you lost to before, knowing there should have been a better outcome," Ratigan said. "You have to make the outcome different this year ... and Jorden did that. We figured things would go our way, especially with the way Jorden has been wrestling. He's been top notch all year, clicking on all cylinders. Heck of a captain."

Meridian claimed the boys team title with 221 points.

Coeur d’Alene junior Brooklyn Anderson, who won at 152 pounds last year and was fifth as a freshman, defeated Elianna Santos-Banks of Reed, Nev., 6-2 in the 160-pound final in the girls tournament.

“She just does a good job on the mat,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “She’s got a lot of mat sense, and it really hard to score on. She knows situations and when she can score and doesn’t make mistakes. She can win 1-point matches, and is really good at it. Winning again is really good to build her confidence and keep moving forward throughout the year.”

Brock Armstrong (second at 165), Justus Peregrina (fifth at 113), Jordan Schield (sixth at 138) and Gabe Larsen (eighth at 157) also placed for Coeur d’Alene, which was sixth with 125 points.

“Brock wrestled hard but had a tough kid in the finals (Bend’s Leif Larwin),” Moffat said. “He had a good tournament, and every match today was tough. Jordan (Schield) beat a defending state champion, then lost three in a row. Justus came back and had a great tournament, kept winning matches and did a good job. We hit a good stride this weekend and now we’ve got to stay healthy and keep moving forward.”

Lakeland sophomore Zach Teal, who won at Tri-State on Dec. 14, finished second at 98 pounds. Tristan Mendenhall of Post Falls was eighth at 98.

Senior Sylvia Becker was fifth at 165 and junior Lilli Marti sixth at 235 for Sandpoint.

Freshman Kahli Brown (138) and sophomore Chloe Thomas (eighth at 145) placed for the Post Falls girls.

“Kahli was working through a lot of different moves and was fully dedicated to what she was doing,” Post Falls girls coach Leah Brown said. “She executed really well and didn’t get ahead of herself and absolutely killed it.”
