PREP BASKETBALL: Bonners Ferry rolls to Lewiston tourney title

LEWISTON — Senior Thomas Bateman scored 23 points and the Bonners Ferry Badgers rolled to a 74-27 victory over the Clarkston Bantams in the championship game of the Avista Holiday Tournament on Saturday at the P1FCU Activity Center at Lewis-Clark State College.
Senior Asher Williams added 22 points for Bonners Ferry (10-0), and was named the tourney MVP. Bateman made the all-tournament team.
“Our emphasis has been on defense and being consistently tougher,” Bonners coach Nathan Williams said. “We have a lot to work on, but we are making strides in the right direction.”
Clarkston (4-6) lost to Colfax 65-40 in the semifinals on Friday, but advanced to the title game when Colfax had to exit the tourney after two games so as to not go over the amount of games allowed in a season by the WIAA.
Senior Eli Blackmore scored 12 points for Bonners Ferry, which plays host to Libby (Mont.) on Tuesday.

WENATCHEE, Wash. — Junior Connor Carver scored eight of his game-high 21 points in the second quarter for the Trojans, who beat the Blackhawks at Wenatchee High to finish the GESA Winter Shootout 3-0.
“We did a good job of creating easy scoring opportunities,” said Post Falls coach Mike McLean, whose team has won eight of its last 10 games. “We did a good job with our defensive intensity and took them out of what they wanted to do.”
Tyras Blake scored 13 points for Post Falls (9-5), which travels to Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday.

EAST WENATCHEE, Wash. — Junior Kailey Walton scored 15 points for the Trojans, who cut the deficit to four points with 2:30 remaining before falling to the Rams of Yakima in the GESA Winter Classic at Eastmont High.
“They came out and made everything and it was looking bad for a while,” said Post Falls coach Mike Divilbiss of West Valley, which led 21-7 after the first quarter. “We got in a little bit of a run in the third quarter and we’d talked about playing with a little more energy in the second half, which we did. I’m proud of how we fought back, but we need to stop the moments of cold play.”
Ellie McGowan scored 12 points for Post Falls (5-11), which travels to Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday.

Landree Simon added 13 points, Mariana Bullington 10 for Lakeland (7-3). Senior Jersi McMurray, named to the all-tournament team, scored nine points for the Hawks.
“It was a great weekend of growth for our team, and now it’s time to focus on preparing for Sandpoint on Tuesday,” first-year Lakeland coach Caelyn Caulfield said.
Nessa Neveau scored 14 points for Pendleton (2-9).
Lakeland plays host to Sandpoint on Tuesday in a matchup of the top two teams in the 4A (now 5A) Inland Empire League in recent years.

IDAHO FALLS — Sophomore Brecken Mire scored a game-high 17 points for the Bulldogs in a loss to the Grizzlies in the final day of the East Idaho Holiday Shootout at Skyline High.
Shay Shippen, a Columbia signee, scored 14 points for Skyline (9-6).
“They played for a state title last year and Shay Shippen is a heck of a player,” Sandpoint coach Will Love said. “Brecken did a tremendous job keeping her down, but they had some other kids that stepped up and hit some big 3-pointers.”
Sophomore Livia Driggs hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points and senior Chloe Laybourne added six points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals for Sandpoint (6-6), which travels to Lakeland on Tuesday.
“We were hoping to get a win today and the girls played hard, especially for their third game in three days,” Love said. “We didn’t shoot the ball the way we needed to, especially on the road. Except for the wins part, we got so much out of this trip in regard to on and off the court.”
