PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Defending their court ... Coeur d'Alene hands 4A Timberlake first loss in defensive battle
COEUR d’ALENE — Just before the holiday break concluded, the Coeur d’Alene girls basketball team got up for another challenge on Friday.
This one, a little closer to home.
The 6A Vikings, winners of two straight state titles, outscored 4A Timberlake 16-4 in the fourth quarter of a 49-38 win at Viking Court, handing the Tigers of Spirit Lake their first loss of the season.
“Timberlake played really aggressive,” Coeur d’Alene coach Stacy Boyd said. “They were challenging some of our players. After coming back from a really good tournament in the Tarkanian and playing Sierra Canyon, our girls were ready for that. It prepared us for what Timberlake had in store and it prepared us well.”
Due to a bookkeeping error, Timberlake started the game with a 2-0 lead on a pair of technical foul free throws by Malia Miller.
Timberlake took a 34-33 lead after three quarters before the Vikings outscored the Tigers 12-2 in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter.
“Their length and athleticism and physicality was the biggest thing today,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “They’re probably the most athletic team we’ve played, and we did a terrible job of adjusting to the weaknesses they had throughout the game.”
Freshman Lexi Wheeler seven of her 14 points in the fourth for Coeur d’Alene (7-7).
“I’m proud of them,” Boyd said. “They still had a little bit of a bad taste in their mouth from Deer Park coming to their home court (and beating the Vikings 75-56). We got out to a slow start and we don’t like that anymore. It’s another 13-0 team and we did what we had to do out of the gate, and I think we did that. The girls fought well, played well. We had some adversity and had some of our starters in foul trouble, but we had some kids step up.”
Sophomore Brookeslee Colvin scored a game-high 15 points for Coeur d’Alene.
“What I like about our girls is that it’s the next girl up,” Boyd said. “If someone is having an off game, someone else steps up. And it’s good for our freshman to step up and kind of feel those big shoes. And I’m proud of her. Our plan was to play man-to-man the entire game, and after we got into some foul trouble, we kind of backed out of that. But the girls handled it really well.”
Junior Malia Miller scored nine points for Timberlake (13-1).
“They played us differently than any other team has played us, and we expected that,” Miller said. “We just didn’t ever adjust. We made the same mistake over and over again, and never learned from our mistakes. We’re going to have to learn to adjust in the middle of the game if something isn’t going our way to move onto the next thing. That’s going to be the biggest lesson, and we’ve got to adjust on the fly.”
On Tuesday, Coeur d’Alene hosts Post Falls and Timberlake hosts Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls.
