Richard (Dick) Varner, 97
Richard (Dick) Varner, 97, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Dec. 28, 2024. Born on June 18, 1927, in Lewiston, Mont., to the late Abbigail Howard and David F Varner. He led a life marked by hard work, dedication in service to others and a love for his family.
Dick Varner grew up in the West and loved Western history and artwork, particularly Charles Russel. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid sportsman. He also found solace working in his garden, restoring old classic cars and tinkering in his workshop. He was a veteran of World War II, discharged with the rank of corporal in the United States Army Air Corps.
Dick retired with the rank of captain from the United States Public Health and Indian Health Service — last duty assignment was area director for Mental Health Services in Aberdeen, S.D. He volunteered for hospice and Habitat for Humanity.
Dick leaves behind a loving family, including his dear wife of 63 years, Louise Varner; his three sons, Rod Varner, Dan Varner and Lee (Ann) Varner; his daughter, Sarah Burton (Dave); and his cherished grandchildren, Christopher Varner, Matthew Varner (Jenna), Kathryn Varner Schultz (Jonathan), Aaron Burton and Laura Burton; and a proud grandfather to his great-grandchildren, Carter, Caleb, Shiloh (Schultz) and Leo and Ada (Varner).
Though he may no longer walk among us, his memory and love will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of his family and all who were privileged to know him.
