mRNA BAN: Protect the right to access and refusal

| February 28, 2025 1:00 AM

I am shocked to learn that the Idaho Senate is considering a bill that would outright ban mRNA vaccines in the state for 10 years. Banning mRNA vaccines would make the COVID vaccine unavailable to people, like my wife and me, who get the shot regularly. It would also put a severe restriction on the availability and use of new mRNA vaccines should we experience another devastating pandemic or similar medical emergency.

Of course, no vaccine is 100% safe. There is always some risk, especially when the vaccine is relatively new. But science and research has shown that this vaccine is indeed safe and effective. This mRNA vaccine has saved many lives over the past four years. And I believe more lives could have been saved if people had not refused the vaccine. This includes my brother, who died of COVID in 2021. He would most likely still be with us today had he gotten vaccinated and not listened to misinformation and conspiracy theories. On his deathbed, as he was gasping for air, he admitted to my niece that he should have gotten the shot.

Idaho residents have the right to refuse a mRNA vaccine if they are not comfortable with it. My wife and I also have the right to have access in our community to a mRNA vaccine that we believe has made a significant difference to our own health and wellbeing. I would strongly urge the Idaho Senate, and all Idahoans, to consider very carefully the serious implications of what a ban like this could mean for the long-term health and safety of our state.
