NAMPA – With nothing to lose, the sixth-seeded Lakeside Knights picked up a win on Friday.
Saturday’s task was just a hill too large to climb.
The Knights, the District 1 champion, shot 12 of 53 from against fourth-seeded Butte County, falling 73-35 in the state 2A girls basketball consolation championship game at Columbia High.
Butte County scored the game’s first 12 points, but Lakeside cut the deficit to 20-13 after the first quarter. Butte County used a 19-2 run in the second quarter to pull away.
“We rebounded the ball a lot better today than we did in our first two games,” said Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman, in his 12th year. “We were down at the half, but still didn’t shoot the ball well. Butte County’s a big team and they did a good job today.”
Lakeside, at state for the second time in three seasons, finishes 14-9.
“It’s a great learning experience,” Dohrman said. “The schedule, the kind of competition we’re going to see and physicality that we’re going to see. Seeing the difference in the referees and how we’ve got to adjust to that. We had some games that we were in some foul trouble, and that hurt us. Hopefully we can build some depth for next year that will help us.”
Cambree Lyon scored 17 points for Butte County (19-8), which was fifth in the final state media poll.
“I was proud of our effort,” Dohrman said. “Butte County was probably the best team we played down here. I was happy with the experience, and we got a win, which is not easy to get. I’m really proud of the girls.”
Junior Kimberly Pluff scored a team-high 12 points for Lakeside.
“It’s been a fun experience,” Pluff said. “I had a lot of fun with my teammates, even though we didn’t get the best outcome that we did. I think we all pushed each other and I’m really proud of everybody. We really pushed ourselves to get here during the offseason and we’re proud of how we played.
Butte County, which starts two players above 6 feet, outrebounded Lakeside 64-32.
“They definitely had size over us and were able to get to almost everything,” Pluff said.
