E. 'Duane' Alton, 88

| February 23, 2025 1:00 AM

E. “Duane” Alton, born Nov. 2, 1936, in Lincoln, Neb., was named after his father, Elvin, but was known throughout his life simply as Duane. As the eldest of five children, Duane’s entrepreneurial spirit became evident at a young age. As a young boy, he took on odd jobs, helped neighbors and even sold firecrackers from his bedroom window.

During his years at O’Neill High School, Duane excelled both academically and athletically, earning numerous accolades in basketball and football. After graduating, he joined the United States Air Force, eventually serving his final station at Geiger Field in Spokane, Wash. Always industrious, Duane worked a second job pumping gas at Economy Gas Station during his off-duty hours. It was during this time that he met Blanche Goddard. Following his discharge in 1958, Duane and Blanche married, and he embraced the role of father to Blanche’s three young children: Pam (6), Greg (4) and Doug (1).

Shortly after, Duane made a life-changing decision to accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, a commitment that profoundly shaped his life and influenced countless others. In 1962, Duane and Blanche welcomed their first child together, Matthew, followed by Troy in 1967, completing their blended family.

Duane’s career flourished as he worked his way up in the automotive industry. Starting with Economy Stations, he eventually leased and managed his own station. Duane had a natural affinity for retail and customer interaction. With hard work and determination, he secured a loan to purchase his own location at Hamilton and Indiana in Spokane, founding Alton’s Automotive Center, which later became Alton’s Tire.

In addition to his business endeavors, Duane’s faith deepened as he grew in his knowledge of scripture. He began guest preaching at area churches and spent vacations leading small-town church revivals. During the Christmas season, he narrated a musical production, “The True Meaning of Christmas,” at many local Spokane public schools, sharing his faith with young audiences.

Duane’s business continued to grow, and his “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” slogan became more than a marketing theme — it was a reflection of his values and way of life. His recognizable presence on TV and radio commercials made him a trusted figure in the community.

In 1991, Duane found love again and married Andree’ L. Rabe. The couple shared a deep bond and spent their years together traveling, serving God, and spreading the love and word of Jesus Christ. Duane’s retirement in 2008 allowed him to focus on these passions. He delighted in sharing Christian children’s books, pens with Bible verses, $2 bills and “Trump dollars,” brightening the days of countless individuals, especially children.

Duane remained steadfast in his faith throughout his life, reciting numerous Bible verses from memory in his final days. He was deeply blessed with a large and loving family, including many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Duane’s life was a testament to his unwavering faith,

entrepreneurial spirit, and dedication to serving others. His legacy of love, generosity, and devotion to God will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Duane Alton left his earthly body and went to heaven to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Feb. 17, 2025.

Love you, Dad, we will all miss you.

A celebration of life will take place next month.
