PREP DISTRICT WRESTLING TOURNAMENTS: Trojans take 11th straight district title

COEUR d’ALENE — For the 11th straight time, Post Falls claimed the District 1 wrestling title, finishing with eight champions on Friday at Lake City High.

“One of the boys was carrying the trophy and said ‘I can’t believe we’ve won this many in a row,’” first-year Post Falls coach Jeremy Zender said. “It’s just a testament to building that foundation over the past few years with coaches Pete Reardon, Abel De La Rosa and all those guys putting in the time to get better. It’s quite the undertaking to keep this machine rolling.”

Tristan Mendenhall (98 pounds), Gage Loftin (106), Matthew Hamilton (113), Logan Loaiza (120), Brandon Felix (132), Rider Seguine (138), Damion Hamilton (165) and Seth Martin (190) claimed titles for the Trojans, who finished with 390 points in the state-qualifying tournament.

“That 113-pound bracket was probably the toughest four kids in the state,” Zender said. “All four of those guys battled and for Matthew to come through that gauntlet says a lot about how much he’s improved and gotten better.”

Carter Newby (126), Logan Bradley (144), Colton Tucker (150) and Gabe Larsen (157) won district titles for Coeur d’Alene, which qualified nine to state.

“Carter was solid and just keeps getting better and better,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “Both Logan and Colton controlled their matches really well. We weren’t sure with Gabe since he’d been out and hadn’t been in a tough match since Rollie Lane (Jan. 4) because of injury, but he was strong all day.”

Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat hopes the Vikings will add a few more participants after the wild-card bids are determined after Sunday’s statewide seeding meeting via Zoom.

“I thought all of our guys wrestled hard,” Moffat said. “It’s going to be tough with only two automatic bids, but we’re hoping we’ll get three to four more in.”

Nathan Booth (175), Garrett Leonard (215) and Sebastian Mossman (285) won district titles for Lake City, with Connor Johnson finishing second at 126.

“Those three champions had a great week of practice and you always hope it materializes,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “They were all solid and just locked in. I was really impressed with those kids tonight. Connor, he’s always been such a gritty kid. I think today, he found how to win his style of match. He wrestles so hard and did a good job of keeping it close in the first period and finding a way to win in the third.”

The state 6A meet is next Friday and Saturday at the ICCU Dome in Pocatello.
