ROCKS: Wear eye protection

| February 16, 2025 1:00 AM

I enjoyed the article about school kids finding fossils in the rocks brought by Stonerose Center. Hands on learning is always so much more impressive than just reading about it in books.

I want to point out that activities like that, should include eye protection. I noticed only one student was wearing glasses. Relatively inexpensive eye protection can be purchased at Harbor Freight and other hardware stores in the area. Kind of surprised that the folks from Stonerose didn’t bring a few pairs with their shale samples. Sounds like they do this frequently at schools?

From a local perspective, the Clarkia Fossil Bowl, just south of Coeur d’Alene, is a great place to find a similar shale fossil deposit. I think the cost to dig there is not too expensive and some of the plant fossils even have color in them. Great fun to dig up your own!
