ISP issues warning about phone scammers impersonating agency
Idaho State Police is warning the public about a scam involving callers falsely claiming to be an ISP captain or representative.
These scammers tell victims they have outstanding warrants and must pay their bond using Chime, Venmo or other online payment platforms.
"ISP does not call individuals demanding payment or request personal information. This is a scam," ISP said in a press release.
This particular phone scam relies on call spoofing, when scammers manipulate caller ID to make it look like the call is coming from a trusted source.
"They use this trick to commit fraud and steal personal information," ISP said.
ISP says to protect against spoofing:
• Do not trust caller ID — Scammers can make it look like ISP is calling.
• ISP will NEVER demand payment over the phone — It does not request or accept Chime, Venmo or other electronic payments.
• Hang up immediately — Do not engage or press buttons.
• Do not share personal or financial information — Never give out Social Security numbers, bank details or other private information.
• Verify the call — If in doubt, contact your local ISP office using official numbers.
• Report the scam — Call your local law enforcement agency or report fraud to the Federal Trade Commission.
