PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Kootenai wins first district title since 2014

COEUR d’ALENE — Freshman Brooklyn Charles had 15 points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the top-seeded Kootenai Warriors in a 35-12 win over the second-seeded Mullan Tigers in the 1A District 1 championship game at North Idaho College’s Christianson Gymnasium. 

It is the first district title for Kootenai since 2014. 

Kootenai (5-11) advances to faces the runner-up from District 2 (Central Idaho) in a state play-in game on Saturday at Post Falls High. 

Freshman Harleigh Dutton had eight points for Kootenai. 

Avah Blankenship scored six points for Mullan, which finished 1-16.

KELLOGG — Dani Henrikson had 13 points and five rebounds for the third-seeded Wildcats, who eliminated the fourth-seeded Maniacs from the 3A District 1-2 tournament at Andrews Gymnasium.  

“The team passed the ball well and everyone stuck to our plan defensively and kept them off the boards,” Kellogg coach Jana Nearing said.  

Aubree Groth had 10 points and 11 rebounds, Jordyn Stutzke seven points, 10 rebounds, seven steals and three assists for Kellogg (9-12), which travels to second-seeded Priest River in the second-place game on Wednesday.  

Priest River (14-7) fell to top-seeded Grangeville (16-6) 69-33 in the championship game on Monday in Grangeville.  

The Spartans beat the Wildcats 52-28 on Saturday in Priest River. 

Orofino finished 6-15.

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Bethany Phillips scored a season-high 15 points for the third-seeded Miners in a win over the second-seeded Jaguars in a 2A District 1 loser-out game at North Idaho College’s Christianson Gymnasium. 

“Genesis Prep has a nice team,” said Wallace coach Nichole Farkas, whose team fell to the Jaguars 45-30 in an opening round game last Tuesday. “They are scrappy and well-coached. Bethany had 15 points, which was great to see. Our girls handled the pressure a lot better tonight.” 

Junior Kylee Phillips scored 16 points for Wallace (11-9), which faces Lakeside (12-7) in the championship game tonight. If Wallace wins, the teams will meet again on Thursday to determine the district’s lone berth to state. 

Senior Sienna Williams scored 16 points for Genesis Prep, which finished 14-10.
