Polar plunging for a cause

POST FALLS — Temperatures barely reached the mid-20s Saturday afternoon, but people were still more than happy to take an aptly-named Polar Plunge into the icy Spokane River in support of Special Olympics Idaho.

“If we’re gonna be out here, we may as well make it fun,” said plunger Nicole Sills.

Sills, along with Erin Bowers and Desiree Dean, dressed up for the occasion in colorful tutus.

“Happy to support an amazing cause,” Bowers said.

Around 100 people came out to Red Lion Hotel Templin’s on the River to take the plunge or watch the spectacle in support. The money raised by Saturday’s plunge goes directly to supporting Special Olympics Idaho athletes.

Special Olympics Idaho coordinator Pancho Edler said this year’s plunge had about five times as many people as previous years.

“It really makes a massive difference,” Edler said.

The plunge was a quick one — most stayed in the frigid water for less than 30 seconds before rushing back to the snowy beach.

But the sting of the water was quickly forgotten as plungers warmed up around fires with snacks from local vendors.

“It was OK,” said plunger Jacob Jandreau with a laugh. “Kind of cold!”

Fellow plunger Brandon Hologa shared the same sentiment — but added that it was all worth it.
