RATHDRUM — Junior Karstyn Kiefer scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half, and the second-seeded Lakeland Hawks recovered from a slow start to beat the third-seeded Moscow Bears 45-30 in the loser-out first-round of the 5A Region 1 tournament Friday night at Hawk Court.
“Our defense kept us in the game, and the girls stayed mentally tough and positive,” first-year Lakeland coach Caelyn Caulfield said.
Landree Simon and Mariana Bullington added nine points each, and Addi Forsman had eight for Lakeland (14-5), which advances to play top-seeded Sandpoint (12-10) in a best-of-3 series for the regional championship and the lone berth to state.
All games are scheduled for Sandpoint. Game 1 is Tuesday, Game 2 is Thursday and Game 3, if necessary, is next Saturday.
Sandpoint rallied in the fourth quarter to beat fourth-seeded Lewiston (7-14) 65-63 in the other loser-out first-round game Friday.
Lakeland won both meetings from Sandpoint during the regular season.
Lakeland trailed Moscow 14-3 after the first quarter, and was down 24-12 2 ½ minutes into the third quarter before going on an 23-0 run to take control.
“We struggled to get our shots to fall in the first half, while Moscow came out in the first quarter firing on all cylinders,” Caulfield said. “Our bench players provided a crucial spark when we needed it most. I’m incredibly proud of every one of our girls; it was a true team effort, built through hard work in practice.”
Jessa Skinner scored eight points for Moscow (9-13), which went scoreless for 8 minutes in the second half.
