Hayden man jailed for stalking

COEUR d’ALENE — A Hayden man who pleaded guilty to peering through a woman’s bedroom window will spend a month in jail.

Jonathan A. Beltran, 24, pleaded guilty in September to stalking in the second degree, a misdemeanor. 

First District Judge John Cafferty sentenced Beltran this week to 180 days in jail, then suspended 130 days of the sentence and ordered Beltran to serve 30 days of actual jail time. 

The charges stem from June 2024, when a woman reported to police that a man had looked in her bedroom while she was sleeping. A week prior, the woman had reported a similar incident and purchased a security camera. 

Video footage showed a man, later identified as Beltran, approach the woman’s home, look into the bedroom window and then leave. 

When questioned by police, Beltran admitted to doing so and said he had wanted to see the woman in a state of undress, according to court records. 

Prosecutors initially charged Beltran with three counts of trespass of privacy, all misdemeanors. The trespassing charges were later dismissed in exchange for Beltran’s guilty plea to the charge of stalking. 

Before handing down the sentence, Cafferty admonished Beltran for an apparent lack of remorse and accountability. 

“I wish you would have made a statement and apology to (the victim),” Cafferty said. “This has affected her a lot. The one place that she should feel safe, she doesn’t.” 

Addressing the court after receiving his sentence, Beltran called the experience “an eye opener.” 

“I lost my home and my family,” he said. “I cannot apologize enough.”
