River City eighth grader wins DAR essay contest

| February 6, 2025 1:00 AM

River City Middle School eighth grader Hailey Jenny-Jeanne Farr is the winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution Pleasantview Chapter's American History Essay Contest.

The Pleasantview American History essay contest was open to students in sixth through eighth grades in all accredited schools in the Post Falls area. The topic of this year's contest was “Enjoying a new kind of Tea Party.”

In the 1770s, colonists protested against the British due to taxes and laws. Along the East Coast, a growing number of patriots held “tea” parties. The Boston Tea Party was Dec. 16, 1773. In October 1774, 51 women in Edenton, N.C., refused to buy tea from the British because of the high taxes and laws. In 1774, women in Wilmington, N.C., burned their tea for the same reasons.

The contest prompted young writers to imagine they were one of those women from history who boldly participated in one of the tea parties in North Carolina. They were asked to give details of either the Edenton Tea Party or Wilmington Tea Party, describe the tea party and why they would choose to join, then explain if it was a good decision.

Hailey was presented with a certificate, bronze medal and monetary award. The Pleasantview Chapter will submit her essay to the Idaho State Society for consideration in the state and national contests.
