Money may be waiting for you
Feb. 1 is National Unclaimed Property Day and State Treasurer Julie Ellsworth said she wants to help reunite Idahoans with their money.
"The Idaho State Treasurer's Office is the custodian of unclaimed property in Idaho," she said in a prepared statement. "My staff and I are dedicated to safeguarding and returning unclaimed property to rightful owners, including Idahoans, cities, counties and state agencies."
In 2024, Ellsworth's office returned over $13.6 million in forgotten cash to individuals, businesses and government entities.
Idaho currently holds more than $281 million in unclaimed property. Unclaimed property is money that is separated from the owner and then remitted to the state as unclaimed.
"Our Unclaimed Property Division keeps the remitted funds in perpetuity. Common examples are forgotten bank accounts, refunds, insurance claims, uncashed checks and much more," Ellsworth said
