PREP ROUNDUP: Judson second; Mandel wins at No. 2 boys singles

Coeur d’Alene High senior Connor Judson, who has signed to play tennis at Whitworth next year, finished runner-up in the Inland Empire Tournament in No. 1 boys singles on Saturday at various courts in Spokane.
Judson fell to Lewis and Clark’s Tate Thatcher 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in the championship match.
Coeur d’Alene sophomore Sam Mandel beat Angel Davis of Davis High in Yakima, Wash., 6-2, 6-3 to win the No. 2 boys singles title.
“This might be the best we’ve done in the team standings in this tournament,” Coeur d’Alene boys coach Corey DeLeonard said. “I am just so proud of our players.”
Viking junior Maddie Hunt beat Lewis and Clark’s Saanvi Krish in the No. 2 girls singles third-place match.
Avi Sahota of Chewelah beat Coeur d’Alene senior Cailtin Combes 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 in the third-place match at No. 1 girls singles.

RATHDRUM — Leah Nordman pitched a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the opener, and hit a three-run homer as the visiting Vikings clinched the Inland Empire League title, then went on to sweep the Hawks.
Nordman walked two and hit a batter for Coeur d’Alene (16-2, 14-2 IEL). She finished 3 for 3 with five RBIs.
Abbey Linder hit a three-run double in the fifth inning for the Vikings.
In the second game, Kyndal Bridge hit a three-run homer in the second inning for Coeur d’Alene, and finished 3 for 5 with four RBIs. Chloe Burke also hit a three-run homer for the Viks, and Jenna Davenport also went yard.
Nordman was 5 for 8 with six RBIs on the day.
Katie Dewey of Lakeland (6-14, 4-10) hit a two-run single in the third inning to tie the game at 5.
Molly Nelson’s two-run triple in the top of the sixth broke the 5-all tie for Coeur d’Alene.
Coeur d’Alene is idle until May 6, when the top-seeded Vikings host either Lake City or Post Falls in Game 1 of a best-of-3 series for the 6A District 1 title.
Lakeland travels to Moscow on Tuesday for an IEL doubleheader.

RATHDRUM — Leading 12-2 when the game was suspended due to darkness in the middle of the fourth inning March 18, the visiting Timberwolves scored twice in the top of the fifth to 10-run the Hawks in IEL play earlier Saturday.
Madeline Peterson finished with 10 strikeouts for Lake City (14-7-1, 12-4 IEL). Layla Gugino hit a two-run homer in an eight-run second inning, and Sammi Chavez hit a three-run homer in the fourth.
Delilah Zimmerman homered and finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Lakeland.
Lake City plays host to Timberlake on Tuesday, then is home vs. No. 3 seed Post Falls on Saturday in the loser-out first round of the 6A District 1 tournament.

SPIRIT LAKE — Senior James Moore hit a three-run home run in the first inning, then hit a two-run double in the third to finish with five RBIs for the Tigers in a nonleague win over the Wildcats at John Shaffer Field.
Senior Jeremy Hurlbert led off the second with a home run and senior Ethan Pecor and sophomore Nate Beardsall had four RBIs each for Timberlake (12-3), which hosts Bonners Ferry in Game 1 of the 4A District 1 best-of-3 championship series on Tuesday.
Talon Clark scored two runs for Kellogg (3-15), which opens the 3A District 1-2 tournament against St. Maries in Orofino on Thursday.
