Behind every iconic brand that reshapes culture, there is someone quietly orchestrating the impossible. For Beats by Dre, that person was Susan Paley, the founding CEO and first employee who turned vision into reality.

Now, Susan is bringing her story, her lessons, and her energy to Coeur d’Alene.

On April 30, residents will have a rare opportunity to meet her during an intimate evening reception hosted by build_ Coeur d’Alene, with a second night of startup pitches and life and business wisdom to follow May 1.

The Engine Behind Beats

When Beats was still just an idea, it was Susan Paley who built it into a company. She brokered the critical early partnerships, architected the business model, and pushed the brand from a loose concept into a global movement.

While Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine shaped the cultural narrative, Susan was the force that made Beats a business.

She forged strategic deals, guided product development, and built a licensing machine that gave Beats massive reach through brands like Chrysler, HP, and HTC. Every time a Beats logo appeared in a car, a music video, or a college dorm room, it was the result of Susan’s relentless drive to turn ambition into execution.

There was no roadmap. No playbook. Just a mandate to make it real.

“You are not negotiating against someone,” Paley said. “You are exploring together how to create something that works for both sides.”

That philosophy helped her navigate some of the earliest digital content deals in history, revolutionize audio experiences, and ultimately drive Beats toward a landmark acquisition by Apple.

Lessons in Getting Deals Done

Susan Paley’s career is a masterclass in how real companies get built. She emphasizes clarity, simplicity, and collaboration over complexity. She believes that understanding the needs of the other side is key to making deals that endure.

“The more you complicate things, the more things fall apart,” she said. “Simplicity is everything — in products, in deals, and in life.”

At Beats, she learned how to move quickly and operate under intense pressure, where execution was demanded around the clock and failure was not an option.

“I had never experienced that level of pressure before,” she recalled. “You had to know everything, deliver immediately, and build something capable of standing on its own.”

Building the Future with Beacon

Today, Paley leads Beacon, a platform designed to support early-stage hardware companies. Through Beacon, she has pulled together some of the greatest minds in global hardware manufacturing to help entrepreneurs avoid common pitfalls and bring their innovations to market more efficiently.

Beacon focuses on helping startups with product readiness, manufacturing strategy, and commercialization, offering rare access to elite expertise that is normally out of reach for early-stage companies.

“We made the mistakes so others do not have to,” Paley said. “Our goal at Beacon is simple: empower the next generation of builders to do it better, faster, and smarter.”
