NIC ROUNDUP: Hashimoto second as Cardinal men clinch spot in NJCAA Championships

LOVELAND, Colo. — North Idaho College freshman Harrison Hashimoto finished runner-up at the West District Championships on Friday at The Olde Course. 

Hashimoto shot a 4-under 68 in the third round on Friday after two rounds of 2-under 70. Freshman Noah Moody was fifth at 70-68-74—212 for the Cardinals, who qualified for nationals. 

"The men grinded all three rounds," NIC coach Brittany Pounds said. "We went into the final round 10 shots behind Eastern Wyoming and just couldn't gain any ground. All five guys played some great golf the last two days and I feel like we're peaking at the right time."

Tytan Birchell of Eastern Wyoming was medalist, shooting a 9-under 63 in the second round on Thursday and finishing with a  to lead the Lancers of Torrington, Wyo., to the team title with a 281-271-283—835. 

The top 10 individuals and top four teams qualified for the NJCAA Championship May 13-16 at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kan.

HELPER, Utah — Kristine Schmidt, a sophomore from Coeur d’Alene High, allowed two hits and struck out 10 in the first game for the Cardinals in a Scenic West Athletic Conference sweep of the Eagles at Heritage Field. 

Emily Hanchey, a freshman from Kimberly High in Twin Falls, hit a grand slam in the third inning of the first game for NIC, which also got home runs from freshman Katelyn Larney and sophomore Faith Nichols. 

In the nightcap, sophomore Corine Doran hit a three-run home run in the third inning and added an RBI single in the seventh as the Cardinals held on late for the sweep.  

NIC (27-23, 9-17 SWAC), in fourth place in the five-team conference, can clinch a berth to the four-team Region 18 Tournament May 6-8 with at least a split vs. fifth-place Utah State-Eastern (8-27, 4-22) today.
