Former Lakeland star Ryan named a WSU Top Ten Senior
PULLMAN — Washington State volleyball senior Katy Ryan was selected to the University’s Top Ten Seniors list.
Ryan, from Lakeland High, was a four-year starter and a 2024 co-captain. She was a part of four postseason berths, including three NCAA tournament appearances and a Sweet Sixteen in 2023.
This past year she was named AVCA All-Region, CSC Academic All-District for the third straight season, and Academic All-Conference for the fourth straight season.
Ryan represented the U.S. Women’s Collegiate National Volleyball team in 2022, was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team in 2021, and was a two-time Pac-12 honorable mention.
Off the court at WSU, Ryan represented the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) from 2022 to 2024 and was on the President’s Committee Advisory Board in 2023.
Her favorite activity as a Cougar has been watching the other WSU sports teams.
“I love sports, and I loved attending athletics events for different WSU sports,” Ryan said in a news release. “It created a close-knit community. We would have so many of them come out to support volleyball. That two-way show of support was really cool.”
Ryan plans to play professional volleyball in Europe, then return to the U.S. to teach elementary school, hopefully in the Pacific Northwest.
For more than 80 years, Washington State University has recognized 10 of the top seniors in each graduating class. The WSU Alumni Association selects those students who represent the highest standards in specific aspects of the college experience: academics, athletics, campus involvement, community service, and visual and performing arts.
Former Zag star Frahm one of three additions to EWU men's coaching staff
CHENEY — Richie Frahm, who played at Gonzaga under coach Dan Monson in the late 1990s, has joined Monson's staff at Eastern Washington as special assistant to the head coach.
Monson, entering his second season as head coach at EWU, also announced Alex Hobbs will move up to the role of assistant coach; and Rhys McVay was named video coordinator.
A key contributor throughout his four years with the Zags, Frahm started every game during his senior season and earned All-WCC honors twice. Frahm appeared in 130 games during his time at Gonzaga.
Frahm played five years in the NBA, appearing in 140 games with stops in Seattle, Portland, Minnesota, Houston and the Los Angeles Clippers.
“The two most important attributes an assistant can bring to a head coach is familiarity and loyalty — Richie checks both boxes," Monson said. "Playing for me, having success under me, and making it to the NBA gives him instant credibility with the current players and his loyalty is unquestioned. His familiarity with EWU and the people in this area is also such a plus for our program.”
McVay is entering his second season with EWU as a graduate assistant and video coordinator. He played collegiate basketball for five seasons at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz.
