Harry Charles Bihler Jr., 76
Harry Charles Bihler Jr. was born into a family of adventure. His father, a Navy serviceman, stationed the family at various bases during his childhood before eventually settling in San Diego, Calif. Perhaps influenced by this lifestyle — or by a deep, innate curiosity about the world — Harry developed a lifelong passion for exploration.
As a young man, Harry set out on a cross-country hitchhiking trip, spending months traveling the highways and byways of America. This journey was not only a quest to see the country but also a chance to learn about himself and the diverse people and places that made up his country. His natural ability to engage with others and show genuine interest in their lives made it easy for him to connect with people along the way.
After meeting his life partner, Kathy, in college, the couple embarked on their own adventure, leaving San Diego to explore the West Coast. They lived in San Francisco for a couple of years, immersing themselves in the city’s vibrant culture and forging new friendships, before deciding to start a family in a place of natural beauty and four distinct seasons.
Their search for the perfect place led them to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where they put down roots and welcomed two children, Anna and Jackson. The family’s adventurous spirit continued as they spent summers exploring the stunning wilderness of the Pacific Northwest.
Harry was a dedicated middle school teacher, guiding countless students at Canfield Middle School and Woodland Middle School on their academic journeys. He held high expectations for his students, not because he demanded perfection, but because he believed in their potential and genuinely cared about their success. His influence shaped many lives, and he took pride in seeing his students grow and thrive.
In retirement, Harry and Kathy’s love for adventure remained strong. They traveled extensively, immersing themselves in the cultures of Europe and beyond. Harry had a special fondness for walking the rolling hills of England, finding peace in its landscapes and history.
Harry will be remembered by all who knew him for his deep curiosity and his unwavering interest in the lives of others. He was a compassionate listener, always asking thoughtful questions to learn more about the people he met, and his kindness left a lasting impact on all who crossed his path.
Harry is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy; his children, Anna (Chase) and Jackson (Joanna); his grandchildren, Finley, Kelyn, Esme and Rowan; his siblings, Gary and Lark; as well as many friends and extended family members who will dearly miss him as he embarks on this next journey.
