PREP SOFTBALL: St. Maries debuts new field with sweep
ST. MARIES — The St. Maries Lumberjacks christened their new softball field in dramatic style Tuesday.
An error by Kellogg on a bunt allowed Lyssa Watkins and Danika Sloper to score with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, lifting St. Maries past the Wildcats 13-12 in the first game of a Central Idaho League doubleheader at the on-campus PotlatchDeltic Field.
St. Maries won the second game 19-8 in five innings.
Watkins walked, and Sloper was hit by a pitch to open the seventh, moved up on a ground out, and scored on the error on Kendra Nicholson’s bunt.
Mia Asbury hit a two-run triple in the third inning for St. Maries (11-7, 7-2 CIL). Watkins hit a two-run single in the fourth.
Charlie McDaniel hit a solo homer in the first for Kellogg (1-15, 1-8).
In the second game, Madie Thomas drove in five runs for St. Maries, Averie Baird went 4 for 5, Stewart was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored, and Brenna Elliott had two doubles and drove in three runs.
Bella Schillereff was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Kellogg, which travels to Grangeville today in CIL play.
St. Maries travels to Grangeville for a CIL doubleheader on Friday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Karsyn DeMent hit a three-run triple in the fifth inning of the first game to snap a 1-all tie and help the visiting Timberwolves hand the Vikings their first loss of the season, 5-4 at Larry Schwenke Field.
In the second game, Ellie Henderson went 3 for 4 with a two-run homer as first-place Coeur d’Alene won 11-8 for the split in IEL play.
Madeline Peterson struck out seven for Lake City (13-7-1, 11-4 IEL) in the opener.
Leah Nordman hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh for Coeur d’Alene (13-1, 11-1), which stranded the tying run at second base.
"I am really impressed with the fight my team showed today," Lake City coach Jordyn Hensley said. "They strung together hits and made things happen. I am proud of them for securing the win Game 1, but I am also proud for their grit in Game 2. It would have been easy to get down when we got behind early on, but they focused in and kept fighting. I am feeling really confident with where our team is at heading into districts."
Henderson homered in the third inning of the second game to boost Coeur d’Alene’s lead to 7-0. Kyndal Bridge went 3 for 4 for the Vikings.
KaeLee Kolden hit a two-run homer as part of a three-run fifth which pulled Lake City to within 7-5.
“Both teams played tough; it was a good old-fashioned slugfest for two games,” Coeur d’Alene coach Bobbi Darretta said.
Coeur d’Alene travels to Post Falls on Thursday for an IEL doubleheader.
On Saturday, Lake City visits Lakeland at noon to resume a suspended game. Then at 2, Coeur d’Alene plays at Lakeland to make up a doubleheader rained out on April 8.

RATHDRUM — Sienna Williams hit a three-run homer in the third inning of the second game, and Natalie Stroud added an inside-the-park homer in the seventh as the visiting Trojans finished off an IEL sweep of the Hawks with a 9-7 win.
Post Falls won the first game 12-7.
Williams finished 4 for 5 in the nightcap for Post Falls (6-8, 5-7 IEL). Stroud was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Kiersten Drake was 3 for 4 with two RBIs in the second game for Lakeland (6-11, 4-7). Abi Helmholz struck out nine for the Trojans.
In the opener, Rylan Morrison hit a two-run homer in the first inning for Post Falls. McKenna Zimmerman was 3 for 4 with a two-run double in the sixth for theTrojan
Lexie McCarroll was 3 for 4 and struck out eight in the first game for Post Falls. Morrison fanned eight in the nightcap.
Post Falls plays host to Coeur d’Alene on Thursday in an IEL doubleheader.
Lakeland is scheduled to complete a suspended game with Lake City on Saturday at noon.
