PREP BASEBALL: Lake City, IEL champ Coeur d'Alene split to conclude regular season

| April 23, 2025 1:25 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Owen Moore and Andy Everson combined for seven RBIs for Lake City, which finished with 15 hits in a 13-6 win over rival Coeur d’Alene in the first game of an Inland Empire League doubleheader at Ted Page Field on Tuesday.

Coeur d'Alene scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to capture the nightcap 8-7.

Tanner Franklin pitched 6.2 innings for Lake City in the opener.

“Tanner was a dog on the bump,” Lake City coach Mike Criswell said. “We woke the sticks up early and allowed him to pitch with a lead the entire game. 15 hits as a team is right where we need to be.”

Harrison Trunkey-Evans and Gavin Helms had two RBIs each in the opener for Coeur d’Alene.

“Lake City showed up, Tanner threw it well and they hit the ball well as a team,” Coeur d’Alene coach Brandon Williams said.

Gavin Helms hit a walk-off double in the second game for Coeur d’Alene (15-2, 13-2 IEL), which clinched the league title last Saturday with a sweep at Lake City.

“We put ourselves in a hole in the second game, but the guys grinded and had a better approach at the plate,” Williams said. “We had the guys take a pitch just to see it. We started to have some quality at-bats.”

Lake City (10-7, 9-6) will face Post Falls in a 6A District 1 loser-out game, with the winner advancing to face Coeur d’Alene in a best-of-3 regional championship series starting Tuesday at Coeur d’Alene.

“We are swinging it well and the defense was pretty clean early on,” Criswell said. “I think we are playing solid baseball, even though we are dealing with a lot of injuries. This next week is going to be interesting.”

Post Falls was supposed to resume suspended games vs. Lake City today and Coeur d’Alene on Thursday. But since the results would not affect district seeding, those games will not be completed.
