EDITORIAL: Uniting Idahoans through charitable giving
In a world where we often focus on differences, there are still a few opportunities to unite around a common purpose. Idaho Gives, running from April 28 through May 1, is precisely such an opportunity. It’s a chance for every Idahoan to become part of something larger than themselves.
As we approach this four-day celebration of generosity, we're struck by a simple truth: The fabric of our communities is woven by nonprofits. They are the organizations that feed our hungry, shelter our homeless, educate our children, protect our environment and enrich our culture. They work in the background, often with minimal recognition, creating the Idaho we're all proud to call home.
Now in its 13th year, Idaho Gives has become our state's largest collective giving campaign. Last year, more than 13,600 Idahoans demonstrated generosity by donating $4.3 million to support over 630 nonprofits. This year's goal — 15,000 donors contributing $4.65 million — represents a declaration of our shared values.
What makes Idaho Gives special is its inclusivity. You don't need to be wealthy to participate. A $5 donation is just as meaningful as a $5,000 one when given with sincere intention. The campaign's power lies in its collective nature: thousands of Idahoans, each contributing what they can, creating a river of support from countless small streams.
Consider what happens when we reach this year's goal. Those millions of dollars will translate into meals served, shelters maintained, wilderness preserved, art created and countless people benefitting. The beauty of Idaho Gives is that you can direct your support to causes that resonate with your personal values, whether that's animal welfare, education, health care or the arts.
For those who have never participated before, the process is simple. Visit IdahoGives.org, browse the participating organizations, and make a contribution of any size. The platform makes it easy to discover nonprofits doing important work that you may never have heard of before.
Right now, many nonprofits are facing increased demand for services alongside decreased funding. Your participation matters. These organizations have supported many of us through tough times. Now it's our turn to support them.
Idaho has always been a place where neighbors help neighbors. It's part of our identity, woven into the character of our communities. Idaho Gives is the perfect expression of this spirit.
So we urge you to visit IdahoGives.org. Find causes that speak to your heart. Give what you can.
