DEER AND ELK: Thinning the herd

| April 23, 2025 1:00 AM

Since moving to southern end of Unit 5 10 years ago, and spending time in the woods spring, summer and fall, I’ve observed a significant decline in elk and deer signs and well-used trails, and sightings of big game during regular rifle season.

I discern that the statistics displayed on Fish and Game charts and graphs presented at public meetings don’t seem to add to elk and deer hoofprints, droppings and sightings out in the actual woods. With the addition of 300 cow tags this hunting season, it means many pregnant cows will be harvested, also killing unborn future bulls and cows.

How could any rancher sustain his cattle operation if he shipped a major portion of his pregnant cows to the slaughterhouse? Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but is not all wild game owned by Idaho residents? Does anyone else see some potential solutions to the problem of diminishing herds?
