CHRISTIANS: Bound to uphold civic order
Regarding the letter to the editor from Dolores Welch:
While compassion is central to Christian teaching, we must also heed Jesus’ instruction in Mark 12:17: “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” This reminds believers that while spiritual values guide our hearts, we are also bound to uphold civic order.
Jesus never dismissed civil responsibility. When questioned about Roman authority, He did not reject it, but clarified that earthly governance has its rightful place. This principle applies to immigration policy. Government leaders, including Governor Little, have a duty to uphold laws that protect borders, manage resources, and ensure fairness for all — citizens and immigrants alike.
Biblical hospitality does not negate lawful governance. The Good Samaritan acted as an individual, not a legislator. Jesus did not advocate for anarchy but modeled personal compassion within the framework of civic life.
In balancing compassion with justice, it is possible to support fair immigration laws while treating individuals with dignity. Faith and law are not enemies — they are complementary. Christians can serve immigrants lovingly without undermining the lawful responsibilities “owed to Caesar.”
