Tribute set for Scott, Mary Lou Reed
The Greater Coeur d’Alene Community Foundation, an affiliate of The Idaho Community Foundation, is leading a campaign to honor two of North Idaho’s most dedicated civic leaders, Scott and Mary Lou Reed.
A tribute bench, designed by local artists Allen and Mary Dee Dodge, will be placed at the base of Tubbs Hill, a location connected to the Reeds’ environmental advocacy and love for the community.
“Scott and Mary Lou Reed are truly the godparents of Tubbs Hill as we know it,” said Ruth Pratt, member of the Reed Project Committee. “They were instrumental in securing this precious jewel and protecting it from development so it could remain a gift for the entire community and thousands of visitors to enjoy. This beautifully designed, functional piece of public art is the perfect tribute to their vision and values.”
Mary Lou Reed, a lifelong champion of conservation, human rights, arts and education, is approaching her 95th birthday. This tribute is a celebration of her enduring contributions alongside her late husband, Scott Reed, whose legal work and activism played a pivotal role in preserving North Idaho’s natural beauty.
"Together, they shaped the region through their unwavering commitment to public service, ensuring future generations could enjoy the vibrant community they helped build," a press release said.
"We want to honor their legacy in a way that reflects their passion for our environment and the people of Coeur d’Alene,” said Dr. Mary Sanderson, a supporter of the project. “Their influence is everywhere — from the trails we hike to the cultural programs we enjoy. This tribute is a lasting testament to their impact.”
The Greater Coeur d’Alene Community Foundation is inviting friends, admirers and organizations that have benefited from the Reeds’ activism to contribute to this meaningful tribute.
