SPIRIT LAKE — With only two teams in the 4A Intermountain League in baseball, those matchups between the Timberlake Tigers and Bonners Ferry Badgers just mean a little more.

Ethan Pecor had two RBIs for Timberlake, which held off the Badgers 8-6 on Friday at John Shaffer Field.

Ryker Brennan and Nate Beardsall scored two runs each for the Tigers (10-2), who led 4-0 after three innings.

“I’m really proud of how we got out of the gate and played with some momentum,” Timberlake coach Bryce Johnson said. “We kind of hit a lull in the fourth inning and Bonners kept picking away and (coach) Tom (Turpin) does a great job with them. They’re going to compete and not go away.”

Thomas Bateman had three hits and three RBIs for Bonners Ferry (5-10), which cut the deficit to 8-6 after six innings.

“They got two in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning and it was a good learning lesson for us,” Johnson said. “They swing the bats well, and we’ve got to fight through it and make plays when it matters. We’re young and there’s going to be nerves, but we made the plays when we needed to. But we’ve definitely got to focus on keeping the foot down.”

The teams will meet again next Friday in a doubleheader in Bonners Ferry. With a sweep, the Tigers will only need to win the first game of the 4A District 1 tournament to advance and host a pod in the state super regional round. If the Badgers win at least once, the teams will play a best-of-3 series to determine the district champion.

Timberlake hosts Kellogg in a doubleheader on Monday.
